My students thought it was odd that I had my head in the planter on the rooftop playground which was VERY HOT however:1. You can watch ladybugs and ants2. A single small tree and a few bushes makes it much cooler. About 4 degrees C. It's very pleasant near the plant. "we should have more plants"They did design the roof to hold plants so there could be a lot more. There are three species of ants in the planter. Lady bugs and two kinds of centipedes. Sadly no spiders.

Being outside in NYC during the day is intolerable unless you have your head stuck in a bush.

@futurebird Sticking my head in a bush? That's one I hadn't thought to try... Imagine my dismay this morning, thinking I'd get some stuff done in the coolth of a library, only to find that the air conditioning at that branch wasn't working. But still much cooler than it was outside. And the branch nearest me is closed until next year to install a new HVAC system! It also has an excellent local history section, which nobody thought to temporarily relocate to another branch. Sigh!

@futurebird I'm sad that I didn't have time to put my head in a tree while we were there recently, although we found a number of delightful parks.I kept my eyes peeled for ants but mostly saw an array of birds and the odd squirrel.I feel a little bad that the only actual insects I saw up close were a couple of disoriented roaches that apparently mistook our bathroom for the new restaurant downstairs -_-;
