@SuperDicq @fence it's an X200 I guess? How's the performance? How long does it typically take to install updates?

@jschwart@mas.to @fence@xyzzy.link performance is totally acceptable for browsing the internet, chatting and programming. Just don't do anything graphically on it.Installing updates is a meaningless measurement. I run GNU Guix and updates can take anywhere from 1 to 15 minutes depending on how many packages need to updated and his fast the internet connection is.

@SuperDicq @fence Surprisingly if you want to go faster you just have to install 2007 distros.

@mangeurdenuage@shitposter.world @fence@xyzzy.link Actually not necessarily true. Some software has added bloat over time yes, but also many optimisations have been made on the meantime.I mean I am running XFCE which hasn't had any new features added in like the past 10 years.

@SuperDicq @fence I need to do a ram comparison from that time to today's DEsAs far as I remember XFCE does use around 600MB of ram which is a lot imo <- uses MATE witch is around 900MB.

@SuperDicq @fence alright, 15 minutes seems quite ok. At some point I was playing with Guix and somehow it was takes hours as it needed to build all sorts of stuff.I might try it again at some point. Thanks!! :)

@jschwart@mas.to @fence@xyzzy.link Did you by chance install the "stable" version of GNU Guix?

@SuperDicq @fence that could be, I don't remember to be honest. What would your advice if I try it again? I'm now running Triskel. I was also thinking that possibly I don't really need disk encryption and avoiding that might make things faster too.

@jschwart@mas.to @fence@xyzzy.link There is no "stable" version of GNU Guix. It's a rolling release distro. The stable ISO available on the website is just a super outdated version (like actual years behind) and that's why it takes over an hour to update it.I have told multiple people that they should stop offering the stable ISO on the website and just give people the latest version instead. But I believe this unfortunate newbie trap is still there.
