The Wayback Machine managed to capture a Linux Journal article about the Arch Linux distribution's plan to switch to "rye-init" before whatever human intelligence remains there figured out that "rye-init" does not actually exist. The Linux Journal predates LWN by some years and was, for a long time, the definitive read for Linux users. The Don Marti ( @dmarti ) years were especially noteworthy. It is sad to see where it has ended up now.https://web.archive.org/web/20250618001301/https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/arch-linux-breaks-new-ground-official-rust-init-system-support-arrives

@corbet @dmarti I was looking around to see if this was similar to a WoW situation where a bunch of redditors convinced journalists that there was a new NPC called Glorbo added to the game but whilist there is an init function in a project called rye, that seems to be as far as I can go with this. The rest is entirely made up, most likely by AI.

@BrodieOnLinux @corbet @dmarti >The Rust init system officially adopted by Arch is named rye-init (or a similar name, depending on upstream branding)Sentences no human would come up with. ;)

@corbet @dmarti it would be less sad if the url said 20250401, but it doesn't :(

@corbet@social.kernel.org @dmarti@federate.social Someone should now quickly add a package called rye-init to the AUR that contains malware.

@corbet@social.kernel.org @dmarti@federate.social Also an init system from Arch written in Rust just sounds like an absolutely terrible idea.I think if this theoretical software existed I would probably still prefer systemd.
