@economics-that-works Theory of moral sentiments.This is Adam Smith’s lesser known work.It opens with passages on the intrinsic human sensibility of sympathy and compassion and sensitivity to others, suffering or joys. As a historical note: empathy was coined (1930s ish) and its original sense was what we convey with the word sympathy. @economics-that-works Listen to the first five minutes, and it will become abundantly clear that whatever the far right or asshole psychopaths like Elon Musk say that about empathy as a weakness, is most assuredly not.In the references, Adam Smith clearly discussing what we eat today call empathy around 1770s or so
