What puzzle-ish thing can I get for an intelligent 5 year old that is quiet, not too fragile, and without a lot of loose parts?

@Fergus33 Nah, too many loose parts. I need something (ideally small) that they can play with in the car.

@tj I don't have that kit, but I do have the snap-circuit kit and break that out every once in a while. Too many parts for what I'm looking for though.

@eriner a 24 piece puzzle for a pre5, 48 for a eaely-mid 5, and the sky's the limit. If they haven't done it since the knob pieces, get an adiquit difficulty and the one before it. As to not discourage, it's a weird set of skills to go for a 5000 piece puzzle

@eriner I missed that this was for the car. How about a 3-D dragon puzzle? Being 3-d adds a little complexity and novelty.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GPJCP7G

@eriner a Shashibo or a magnetic maze game with all the pieces contained under plexiglass. Both are a hit from 4+ and you can't lose pieces in the car.

@eriner Growing up we had a bag of puzzle papers in sleeves with wet erase markers. That was a good distraction.Recently we used reactive paper and markers for our three year old on our 16 hour (one way) road trip. Something like this: https://www.crayola.com/feature/color-wonder

@eriner Not so quiet but doesn't require anything...- the alphabet game (words starting with A, B, ...)- I spy something (a color)Some item suggestions Paper & stickers & pencils / crayons.Where's Waldo book.A maze or dot book.Easy sudoku book. When I did road trips with the kids the usual routine was- breakfast- some activity nearby (up to an hour)- lunch- drive longer (kids would nap)- maybe another activity- dinner

In looking, I ended up getting two of these (level 1) puzzles. They're not dirt cheap, $10, but they're metal so if cleaned and oiled once in a while they should hold up for a long time. They were too challenging for the kids, but all the adults I passed them around to had a lot of fun. They're made by Hanayama. Quality gifts for birthdays, holidays, and good for ages ~7+.

The new ones arrived in the mail today. These are a lot of fun. Probably not worth $10/ea if you’re the only person who’s ever going to use them, but the easier ones are great to pass around at parties. The keys in particular.I imagine I’ll feel like I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of the more challenging ones, but only time will tell.I’ll post in a few weeks which ones I end up liking the most.
