Time for a new #SideProject ✨imma be building a #homelab setup, basically a bunch of small servers in a cluster for doing home computation. i always find these silly, but i actually have a need for one now that im trying to cut loose from all cloud services/subscriptions#sysadmin #Linux #AlpineLinux #RaspberryPi #Pine64 #SOQuartz #NAS

first up: the ingredients ✨most if not all of these devices are "pantry" meaning i had them for a long time or were e-waste from other people or reclaimed electronicsi didn't wanna go out and buy everything brand new, because1. it's very expensive, i don't have that much money2. it feels morally wrong and very cisadmin poser-y3. i've been hoarding computers (read: ewaste) around with me for so many years, time to put put it all together

i'm gonna try and make a rack-mounting thingy out of an old ITX computer case!i'll do this with #CAD and some #3Dprintingi would love to invest into a mini rack, but i just realized that's cisadmin pinterest vibes, and i might as well re-use this scrap metal i have lying aroundone should be enough to fit most of the stuff i want in there, but i actually have a second identical one that i can flip upside down and mount on top of this one for expansion in case i need that later

what am i gonna fit in there? well, some old #RaspberryPi's i had laying around.NOTE: i am Not buying these new, but one thing i support even less than a "british SBC manufacturer obsessed with hiring police", it's e-waste, so these are going ini also additionally have a #Pine64 #SOQuartz ComputeBlade which is a very neat form factor-y 1U computer that is very easy to fit in tiny spaces, ideal! ✨

the #Pine64 #SOQuartz has a nice lil trick: a M.2 slot that i fit with a 6 port SATA controller thingybasically, i get to add 6 harddrives to this, giving me the option to #RAID (basically, turn several disks into just one, with some built-in backups and protection)i've ordered 6 2.5" harddrives from a laptop repair shop in Ireland on eBay that should arrive any day ✨ again, trying to reduce e-waste here :)

the scary part about this build has to be the fact that i built my own power supply, from off-the-shelf parts (didnt design the PCB or anything)however, its the first time i wired something higher than 12V (its 230V AC), but it works!its just done in a somewhat sketchy manner that probably is ill advised by electricians, either that or i'll learn that most electronics are a lot less safe than i think

i basically added two screw terminals to my design and started hooking up all of the cables i need to these terminals, and my temperature camera is telling me one of the terminals reaches 32 degrees celcius 🤔nothing bad has happened with 8+ hours of running thusfar, but now i've removed the (optional and not required) cooling that i added, to see how it performs with 0 coolingit runs fine and nothing weird is happening, but it does make me a bit nervous
