Do people in the south in the US sometimes call air conditioning "the furnace" if they live somewhere cold?

Well I'm watching a video of a girl rebuilding an old house and she called it a furnace. And I'm 99% sure it's just A/C

every home central ac has a furnace. the furnace moves the air. in winter it heats and moves the air. if its a heat pump system it has an air handler

I’ve always called it ac in the summer and heat pump or just heat (I.e. turn up the heat) in the winter. When I lived in Ohio we had a separate gas furnace for the winter since it got a lot colder than the south.

The heater part of the HVAC system is usually referred to as the furnace unless it's a heat pump.

It's not uncommon to refer to the inside unit as the furnace, especially if you have gas heat.

K I watched ten minutes of that SimpShit (on high speed) and didn't see her mention it so I will guess that she's talking about a heat pump.

I think it's a heat pump. It's made by Pioneer. The main unit is outside with a remote control wall thing. It does heat and ac.

an ac dc inverter driven highly efficient heatpump for heating / cooling small spaces. rated less than 2 tons usually. they come matched condenser and evaporator with a lineset that cant be altered.

Americans consider these units mini. Not real ac. Real ac for them is a central air unit like in commercial large buildings

gas furnace/heatpump is a great setup. down here i prefer an ac/gas furnace for most applications as ac runs 10+ months a year and is slightly more efficient as an ac. i have never even hooked the gas up to my furnace here and use gas wall heaters one or two weeks a year.

air conditioning just means air cooling around here, not necessarily both heating and cooling. so the furnace is for heating and ac is for cooling, but the "furnace" can do both in a forced air system

im not a heatpump fan. they arent great if its really hot or really cold. they are shit at any less than 25°F and not as efficient as a dedicated ac when its very hot and humid.

I have heard it called that in the north, we use it as a catch all term for the interior air handling unit that does both AC and heat. You can get that unit with different combinations of heat and cool. In the south they typically use a heat pump (reversible AC) as it does not typically get cold enough for a full blown gas furnace.

Most houses in the US use a central air handler to both heat and cool their house at different times of the year. It's essentially modular, and you can get oil, natural gas, or propane "furnace" for heat and a separate AC coil that just stacks on top. From the limited view in this video, I s hard to tell exactly what she has, but it's probably just a "heat pump" where the in-duct coil is used for both heat and AC. These frequently have back up electric coils for colder temps and people may call it an electric "furnace"

So, I got curious and skimmed her other videos. She had a propane tank and furnace installed. The exhaust and other piping just isn't visible in the short clip included in the summary video.
