The cops in LA are more out of control than normal in the footage of these protests. They are shooting into crowds who are standing in a park with signs during the day well before curfew. Throwing tear gas. And also not saying anything? There are no instructions to leave or anything being given as they try to make the protest end. It's not about keeping the streets clear for cars. They are acting like having a protest is illegal. This is LAPD too. What is they mayor doing?

@futurebird axiomatic among big city mayors that one should never give an order to cops unless you're pretty sure they'll obey. seems to be interpreting that as 'don't try to give orders to cops.'

Is it legal to gather in the park and shout slogans and hold some signs to petition the government for redress of grievances or nah?I think it can be easy to get jaded and assume that when people get injured by police in protests they must have "done something" eg not gone on the sidewalk when asked by the police* or whatever but this isn't true. We don't really live in a country where protest is defacto legal anymore and this has been the case more and more over time.Do you like that?

@futurebird The govt of LA, and the LAPD specifically, have treated sections of the city like a foreign occupied territory for a very long time. They´ve literally burned down sections of old LA. And the police have been problematic throughout the city´s history.

@futurebird I was talking to a family member who expressed concern whether an event had a permit and I said “from a practical standpoint, I get that you want to reduce your risk of getting hurt by the police, but from a legal standpoint, the event does not actually need a permit.”

@platypus The good news seems to be that if there are enough people and if enough of them are white, not under 30 and middle-class looking police won't try as hard to shut the event down. But I've seen video from LA of a park full of people in broad day light just holding signs and getting shot at for existing. The crowd was about half white people and mostly younger which is why I think the police decided they could escalate.

@platypus The young people were doing nothing. Keeping their distance from the police, not even yelling much or seeing angry (yelling and angry being perfectly normal protest things to do)There was no pretext for the use of force at all. Zero.

@platypus I'm scared of police and I will leave if I see too many of them. It is maybe sad that I can be intimidated easily but I'm very small and not steady on my feet because I have a bad leg. Also I'm scared and you can make fun of me for that or whatever BUTThat doesn't make it right or good that police are intimidating people from protesting if they want to. That isn't their supossed job. That isn't serving the public or a good use of "muh tax dollars"I'm glad there are videos!

@futurebird absolutely. And this family member has a disabled partner so I very much get their desire to not be injured or arrested or have their job at risk. I also want to be sure we continue to name that we are (and have always been, some more than others) living under something other than our actual rights that people brag about.

@futurebird Even here in Germany, where the cops are usually not quite as trigger-happy, I’d never assume someone did anything wrong if they come out of a police interaction with injuries or if they get arrested. Especially if it happened at some kind of protest, but even in a “routine” control or something. I’ve seen cops unnecessarily escalating the situation more often than keeping their calm.At one big event ten years ago toilet brushes became a meme, because cops had classified one someone had sticking out their backpack as a dangerous weapon and a reason to pull him out violently.

@futurebird I fear that progressive mayors try, and quickly learn that the police will riot, doom their mayoralties, and possibly also kill their constituents if they properly rein them in, so they develop a "balanced" approach that refrains from actually addressing the root problem that some of those who work forces are the same that burn crosses.

@futurebird Karen Bass seems to be ok with her police chief and rank/file escalating unnecessarily against journalists and rally goers who are literally doing nothing. The local press (with a couple of exceptions) are repeating the story of 'rioters' and not really acknowledging that the LAPD starts everything. NOTHING is happening then they start firing into crowds and creating chaos well before curfew.Karen Bass, the city's first Black woman mayor, is absolutely A-OK with that.

@futurebird I attended a protest at the Tesla in Europe. The protest was against the power of the oligarchs, including Trump. Although a really unexpected number of police officers showed up, also firefighters and a police negotiator (some of us climbed on the roof), still in the end no one was taken away, injured. It was the result of negotiations with the police. And finally, one of the police officers made an off-the-record comment about Trump and Musk as scumbags.

@futurebird They apparently also accidentally exchanged non-lethal gunfire and tear gas with the sheriff's department before everybody got their shit together. And some of the deputies who got gassed didn't have masks.

@futurebird I'm glad the footage is shocking. I worry that it'll get edited or presented in a way that makes it seem as if the protesters and cops are equally at fault. I'm also glad the cops are unable to control themselves until dark, when you can throw a smoke bomb to mostly cover up direct shots at unarmed humans not presenting any physical threat. (I just keep seeing the dude break formation to aim - drawing the eye - and shooting that reporter with a rubber bullet. It wasn't even the worst injury inflicted on a reporter so far, but it was sure the most visible and obvious.)I hate all of this. I wish I knew of the kind of changes that actually improve police departments, because LAPD has been famously awful for so long. And the county sheriffs, the LASD, are nearly as bad. Mayor Karen Bass probably can't do a whole lot against the entrenched bureaucracy of two of the skeeviest police departments in the country. Sigh.

@futurebird Bass is showing she can be "tough on crime" just like a Republican. Mayors of every city fear the police, and won't do diddly to reign them in.

@futurebird Unfortunately, I’m not sure the mayor disapproves of this. Frankly, it’s idiotic beyond belief since in California almost all the discretionary funds come from sales taxes and those will take a big hit during any prolonged protest. But unfortunately politicians are not usually selected according to their clear levelheaded thinking.

@futurebird this has all happened before. all we need to complete the scene is Pinkertons showing up with machine guns, burning unhoused peoples' tents, and murdering their children. the Ludlow massacre need not happen again, but that doesn't mean it can't. be ready, this one's a tear-jerker.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDd64suDz1A
