Happy #BlackHistoryMonth !I'm still not talking about Black history. I'm still talking about white US history.Q: Why do Black kids not do well in school? Is it because their dads are uninvolved and uncaring parents? Bill Cosby and Herschel Walker told me that, and they are good and wise men that we should listen to! It's Black dads' fault! Boo Black men!A: No. Black kids only do poorly in school *in extremely racist countries.* #BlackMastodon

Black dads are *more* involved in both early childhood activities like bathing and diapering, and school aged activities. From the CDC:A larger percentage of Black dads (41%) had helped their coresidential children with homework every day in the last 4 weeks compared withwhite (28%) dads.Only 30% of white dads take their own kids to activities every day, vs 42% of Black dads.71% of white dads talk with their kids about their day, vs 79% of Black dads.Etc, etc.

But is poor school attainment because so many Black kids are born out of wedlock? The Nick Cannon effect? No. The anecdotes are Nick Cannon, not Elon Musk, or Larry Bird. How many kids does Larry Bird have? That we know of? How many kids does Elon have? That we know of?But ignore these ovulation addicts. The data shows that co-parenting is the trend for everyone. And it's fine.

"OK, when Black dads are present, they're involved. But too many Black dads are just not there! Why aren't they there?"In the US, a Black man has a 1 in 4 chance of going to jail. Most likely for "drug use," even though white folk do more drugs. đ¤ˇđżââď¸Most Black dads incarcerated have not even been convicted of any crime. They're "awaiting trial," and are too poor to afford bail. You can be waiting for trial for *years*.

Just being falsely arrested will likely cause you to lose your job, and can prevent you from applying for a new one.The mother of your child will likely need to apply for public assistance while you are locked up. The state will give her financial assistance... and then bill you.đŽYou will rack up debt to the state *while you are in jail!*. You will be in "child support arrears."

Most of the time, this is not what the mother wants. Her partner has just been falsely arrested and so can't help with bills. She needs to make rent or she'll be evicted. She applies for assistance not to punish her partner, but to not be homeless with the children.Even if you are innocent, you've just gone from being an employed, present Black dad...To a dead beat dad, with warrants for his arrest for failure to pay child support, who can't even apply for many jobs due to the first arrest.

Some of you will remember that Walter Scott was shot in the back while running from police. But do you know why he was running?https://www.themarshallproject.org/2015/04/10/why-was-walter-scott-runningIf your definition of "stability in the household" revolves around marital status or cohabitation, rather than this systemic racism minefield presented to the parents, I urge you to reflect on that.I mean, half of y'all's parents are divorced. đ¤ˇđżââď¸ That's clearly not the issue.

So this is where most of the Black dads are: in jail for unjust arrests. A human rights atrocity committed at a genocidal scale. Millions of dads. But how do some Black kids in this situation manage to overcome this and get good grades anyway? Many factors, but an important one: Black teachers.âĽď¸đđżSchool in the US is fantastically racist too. A racist teacher cannot teach a Black student effectively. Even teachers that don't think that they're racist, do this:https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/oct/04/black-students-teachers-implicit-racial-bias-preschool-study

This can be countered by Black teachers. âĽď¸đđżBlack students randomly assigned to at least one Black teacher in grades K-3 are 9 percentage points (13%) more likely to graduate from high school and 6 percentage points (19%) more likely to enroll in college than their same-school, same-race peers.https://www.nber.org/papers/w25254White kids can benefit from this too, and aren't harmed by it. Black kids from privilege benefit a little. Black boys from underprivileged backgrounds benefit the most.

People looking to minimize the impacts of racism, believe that Black teachers help through the "role model effect." That's part of it but not the whole story. There are few enough Black teachers in this country, that we can literally ask a good portion of them what's really happening. It's not just the role model effect. Teachers are shielding Black kids from racism. Until they can't anymore...https://time.com/6130991/black-teachers-resigning/

The typical education experience for a Black boy in the United States, is to have almost all white teachers, mostly women, more than half of whom vote for the most racist candidate on any ballot, and no Black teachers. The teachers have low expectations of you, punish you more than your classmates, and threaten to call the cop who works in the hallway on you at any moment.I don't know how to explain more clearly, that this is never going to work.

I'm not surprised that Black US kids in the US don't perform as well as white US kids, or as well as Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, or Caribbean kids. I'm surprised that any Black kids make it through this hellish gauntlet at all. When you look at how much the US pays to educate each student, and how poorly it does at Black educational achievement, it's clear that the US is the worst country in the world at educating Black students, by far. Because racism. No one spends more to achieve less.

@mekkaokereke I'm an American and find it confusing, just as a matter of public policy. As a child, the cafeteria people worked around it when kids forgot their lunch or kept going hungry, though quite a few of us were, I don't know, programed to think that it wasn't right to take straight charity. But it seems silly in terms of complexity, especially given how hunger impacts learning and behavior. It ultimately costs more to not make sure they're fed. Plus it's mean.

Back then the official rule seemed to be that you couldn't get behind at all - there were definitely confrontations with some of the cafeteria workers, especially for the bigger kids. Like, no money means no lunch. It was the lady in charge who *fixed* things. She was kind of a "I won't tolerate disorder" person.(Lunch was $0.85, which is $2.10 now. With 800k students, just 1% of the kids being in arrears would quickly become a budgetary crisis. The whole model was broken.)

@mekkaokereke @Unampho @thekernelinyellow This may have changed since school didn't commonly last past lunch while I was in it (until near graduation), but interestingly the concept of school lunches is alien to me (German). Then again the class issues were palpable even though I had little explanation or context for them and that may be part of it, since I remember that *some* students had to stay at school in the afternoon also đ¤I wouldn't be surprised if there were lunches that had to be paid for here, though, since most other mandatory school-related expenses like bus tickets or text books did cost (a lot of) money. This place has severe issues in that regard in hindsight, since the quality of the material could vary greatly depending on how much the parents would spend đ(The place was rural and the supply store small, but it still stocked low-, mid- and high-grade paper notebooks I believe, and the difference that makes in ease of writing and ink drying is severe.)

Bail reform here was good when it first passed, getting rid of bail bondsman, but has since been corrupted to let even those who are a danger get out of jail free. Teachers and authority figures of all kinds should be actively anti-racist. Sadly, that's not the case. Cops should not be school disciplinarians.

@mekkaokereke why aren't there more black teachers? From the far it doesn't seem that teachers are the go to job if people want to make money.

@escamoteur @mekkaokereke Retired teacher here. Itâs not just money, itâs the working conditions. Not enough prep time, admin doesnât have your back, and thereâs a chill wind blowing through the classroom if you care about your kids.Teachers know the importance of mentoring and support, but thereâs not enough of it, even before taking on the problem of implicit bias against students and teachers of Color. The problem is both salaries and RESPECT.

@nershelam @mekkaokereke @Unampho @thekernelinyellow I take your point and hope that I don't sound like the defensive American here but it varies state to state in the US. In Connecticut and some other cities and states, kids get free meals and free health care up to 18. Agree it should be national.

@mekkaokereke @Unampho @thekernelinyellow -Nah. There was a BBC story the other day saying, isnât it heartwarming that this man in Alabama would go to his local pharmacy and give the pharmacist $100 a month with instructions to use the money to buy pharmaceuticals for someone who couldnât afford them. Youâd think a *British* network would say, âWait, there are people in America who canât get drugs because they canât afford them!? What century is this.â But nah.

@mekkaokereke @Unampho @thekernelinyellow The other thing I love about that story (the Washington Post told it too) is that all the people in his community who found out about it said he was an angel. If the government was paying for those peoplesâ pharmaceuticals, you know their neighbors would say it was Socialism.

@mekkaokereke If you compare Australia to US, some interesting things become apparent.Abolish local police. State police forces can provide better training and oversight, and if there is endemic problems, a Royal Commission style enquiry usually identifies and helps clean up the problem.Abolish local education boards. State education departments are harder to be dominated by politically partisan groups. Non Partisan Election groups to determine electorates and manage elections Remove popularly elected law and judicial roles and make these rolls less dependent on fund raising and pandering to popularist supporters. Unfortunately, these changes *will* cause a civil war in the US ..

@mekkaokereke @Unampho @thekernelinyellow l see what you mean. But we #EU citizens shouldn't be to proud of what we have. There's plenty of politicians and special interests who wish to abolish it and see the #USA as a positive model. And thanks to them and our own apathy, our #social systems are slowly but surely being eroded... and this has been going on for 40 years at least.

@webbureaucrat @Homebrewandhacking @stooovie Did you know itâs easier and cheaper to just feed all the kids? Means testing adds substantial administrative costs and is based in the idea that poverty is a moral weakness and that you canât take care of people without making them first prove that they deserve it. Just feed the kids. Just feed them.

@shawrd773 @webbureaucrat @Homebrewandhacking @stooovie This is what New York City schools are doing now, providing free breakfast and lunch no matter what. It's not great food by my smug French mug standards, but it doesn't require to fill any form to get access to it. They also carry the program through school breaks including summer breaks.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/foâŚschools.nyc.gov/school-life/foâŚ

@mekkaokereke My mom, who taught elementary school for 38 years, always tells stories about how when integration came to Orlando and the way white parents were so fearful for their kidsâ safety. They peered through the windows to make sure theyâre kids were okay. I guess they thought their kids would be stewed and served w/a side of cornbread. But she also says that once white parents learned how much better the Black teacher were, they all clamored to get their kids in Black teachers classes.
