If there's anything that illustrated the hollowness of the Democratic Party as an effective opposition for me, it's this. Yesterday, I watched a video of a sitting US Senator being thrown to the ground and cuffed by fed goons for asking questions of the fed official he has direct oversight authority over.Within minutes, I'd gotten DOZENS of texts from Dems and Dem orgs asking for $5-$50 to "fight fascism."That's it. "Are you terrified that your country is slipping into fascism? Pay me."

@pluralistic I know. Anything becomes an opportunity to beg for money. Instead of concrete action. We need a viable third party not completely beholden to money and moneypeople.

@pluralistic They nickel and dime the poor for donations, while accepting millions from billionaires, all the while assuring us they're the party of the working class.

@wjmaggos @Gladso @pluralistic I'm with you there. Our experience with it in San Francisco has shown that it's harder to buy off pols. But the billionaires here have still found a way to control politics by taking over the Dem party establishment and by funneling billions (with a B) into local elections. It's not a panacea...it needs to be coupled with a strong political movement that holds the politicians accountable.

@ildiavolorosso @Gladso @pluralistic how do you do it?the Alaska model where you can vote for anybody in the first election and then have RCV for the general seems great to me. basically eliminate party control, outside of being a membership org that can do endorsements ala Sierra Club etc.the primaries screw everything up.

@wjmaggos @Gladso @pluralistic It's complex here.In California, the Dems implemented a Top-two primary at the state level. That has had the effect of eliminating third parties here, and making money more important in state-level politics, which is part of the reason why only corporate Dems get elected at the state level.in San Francisco, we have single round RCV with the single transferrable vote method for supervisor and mayoral elections. We had some success with it for grassroots candidates, but billionaires basically bought the last election, placing their preferred mayor and many board of supervisors candidates in place. We have also struggles to recruit grassroots candidates to run in some of these elections, which makes it far easier for the billionaires to buy off the ones remaining.

@wjmaggos @Gladso @pluralistic I'd be happy of Fl. had open primaries. That way everyone can vote for the candidates in the beginning. We both changed to Republican last year so we could try to prevent Flynns attempted take over of Sarasota county politics. Apparently quite a few others did the same as it was reported the republicans had massive growth just before the primaries. I'd love to go back to being an Independent and even better f the 2 main parties had no clue how voting would go. Not like now where the republican's know the majority will vote team red.Signed RINO Nerb

@wjmaggos @ildiavolorosso @Gladso @pluralistic The ending of party primaries is an attack on freedom of association. Without them, any hack can stick a “D” next to their name, i.e. claim the brand of a group but not be their choice of candidate.

@Simplicator @ildiavolorosso @Gladso @pluralistic anybody can run in a party primary today. they can promise to vote any such way and with lots of corrupting money, win that election where there's very little turnout. we have lots of Dems that would be considered Republicans not too long ago.at least with RCV, there isn't the fake credential that only proves you were the least bad person running in the primary. making parties member orgs would make their endorsement mean much more.

@Simplicator @wjmaggos @ildiavolorosso @Gladso @pluralistic Case in point (pun): Ed Case runs as a Democrat every term, then votes as a Republican. Then every Republican in Hawaii votes for him in the primary, along with a few clueless Democrats, and he goes back to DC to vote Republican again. It almost makes me support term limits. It definitely makes me support closed primaries. You shouldn't be allowed to vote in another party's primary.

@jhavok @Simplicator @wjmaggos @Gladso @pluralistic With plurality vote general elections, there will only ever be two primary parties. If you haven't read it already, check out Fixing Elections from 2002. It informed my support for RCV early on. But as we've seen in San Francisco, it's not a panacea: money still somewhat dominates our elections, especially the citywide races.

@ildiavolorosso @jhavok @Simplicator @Gladso @pluralistic but what if more money spent didn't mean more attention?imo that's the greatest promise of everybody using decentralized social media and "having gone viral among the smart people with a diversity of opinions we follow" mostly being how we decide what to read, watch and listen to.

@wjmaggos @jhavok @Simplicator @Gladso @pluralistic That’s a big reason why I’m here. But like RCV, I don’t think there is a silver bullet solution to the problem. I think it’s going to take a sustained political movement, largely outside the boundaries of establishment parties, coupled with multiple “exogenous” factors (like democratized social media, opportunistic campaigns on traditional media, direct action, etc).
