I wish there were a way to make it clear to the Trump supporters who think that this country would be better off without the millions of 'undocumented' but defacto legal and fully integrated into our economy immigrants that neither democrats nor republicans have ever made a serious effort to "just enforce the law" (unless you count efforts at naturalization)And if republicans ever tried to keep the promises they make it'd be a monstrous disaster.

I'm convinced that part of the problem is people have no concept of what "millions of people" means. What that means logistically and socially. All republicans can offer is to harass people ... a tiny fraction of the people and spread fear. We just need to stop having millions of people who live, work and pay taxes in the US who aren't citizens and that means a pathway to citizenship. It's the only thing that makes any sense.

I do think people like Steven Miller understand the scale of the operation they are proposing. And that's why he should have never been allowed near any power at all. The guy is a ghoul.

I still feel like I'm not explaining this well. My point is Trump isn't doing it. He's not making this a country where only people who are here "legally" are allowed to be here. And he isn't going to do it unless things go deeply sideways because to make that happen you'd need massive camps, and the entire US military focused on doing just that one thing. To civilians. For basically racism. Not saying it can't happen but it'd also hurt the economy so.

@futurebird It's just racism. They actually believe in the superiority of certain groups of people because of the colour of their skin and they do actually believe in the "great replacement theory" (funny how it was Europeans who actually enacted it, as a sustained long-term genocide against native americans...).And all those black people who voted for Trump? They will be coming after them, too. Have no illusion.

@futurebird Trump is ... easily led. A zig-zag wanderer, a tourist in his own life, untethered from reality in any meaningful sense - incapable of shame, a ruinous tornado of destruction plowing through the world like a big tornado hitting a farm.Trump is out of his mind, a reminder for our times of how monarchs once behaved, and the scheming courtiers who surrounded them. Hobbes has a lot to say about this in Leviathan

@futurebirdAs a former legal immigrant, the legal path to citizenship is expensive, tedious, repetitive, document heavy, and expensive. I lost count of how many times I got fingerprinted.Expediting that for everyone would be a huge win for the country because naturalized citizens vote and pay taxes. We chose to come here. But for the racists, not all immigrant are white.

@futurebird I don´t think that is their point. They want to have the right to say who goes and who stays, at their whim. In that regard, they are making their base very happy right now.

@futurebird Absolutely.IIUC the story, we had laws on the books that went under-enforced until the Reagan administration, where a combination of straight-up racism and war-on-drugs panic started the ball rolling on what would eventually become today's Southern border. It caused undocumented immigration to rise significantly, and not only because of new tracking. When the barrier to entry was low, people would just bop back and forth to Tijuana. But if you put up a fence and make people choose sides? Of course they chose the side with the hot dogs on it.(And, I mean, the job they had that pays. But I'm gonna blame the hot dogs 😛 ).Our immigration law just isn't reflective of the reality of how people live, full-stop.
