The uk official #tradeUnion stats were out a couple of weeks ago, and some significant updates to the regulator’s admin data, so it’s time for your periodic reminder that THE MAJORITY of #unions can be growing even while the movement as a whole continues to decline. Why is this important to understand? Because the decline of the union movement isn’t simply a function of a universal and generalised hostile environment, and unions must act and reposition for better outcomes

It will surprise exactly NOBODY that I have opinions - of which many (most) are really fucking unpopular with colleagues across the movement - on how unions are, to a large extent, the agents of their own demise.- big unions are mostly worse- mergers are usually a shit idea…- …and ZOMG: dismally executed- Labour affiliation is really not helping- craft unions are a better fit for today’s fragmented, fluid workforce- small unions care about small bargaining units like the titans never will

If I ever get round to writing that book, its central thesis will be on how we inherited an intrinsically adaptive, learning ‘organisation’, born as the counterbalance of Industrial Revolution, and turned it into a self-indulgent, sclerotic OAF, barely capable of surviving the current Industrial Revolution, let alone directing traffic.
