What happens when 90% of a country moves to a 4-day workweek with no reduction in pay? Good things happen."Icelandic reports show that productivity has remained stable, and even increased in some sectors. One of the keys to this success lies in improving the mental health of workers, a crucial aspect highlighted by Generation Z. The reduction in stress, combined with a better work-life balance, has had a significant positive impact on employee well-being."https://farmingdale-observer.com/2025/05/31/iceland-approved-the-4-day-workweek-in-2019-nearly-6-years-later-all-the-predictions-made-by-generation-z-have-come-true/#economics

@FantasticalEconomics That's a heck of an idea. There are 4-day work weeks here, but it's 10 hours per shift. If only Canada and the US would adopt such ideas.

@countdracula @FantasticalEconomics That's exactly what I'd see happening here in the US: add up the hours to ensure you're still working essentially five days. I'm getting burned every week from my day job, barely able to take weekends off as it is.

@dianemagras @FantasticalEconomics I used to work at a place that did the 4-day week. The shifts were 10 hours, though. I like Iceland's idea better, but I'd guess there would be a bunch of sphincters slamming shut if they were required to do something like what Iceland is doing. 😀 I'm retired now, so I don't have to worry too much about that anymore.
