I've just set up vm-bhyve on a vanilla FreeBSD 14.2 server and created my first VM, it was actually a lot easier than I thought. :D

And now there's a Debian 12 VM running on bhyve with the nvme disk driver.To be honest, vm-bhyve seems to be all I need to run my virtual machines. Maybe I'll just replace my Proxmox VE host and use bhyve instead...

Do you know if bhyve is able to be used with netbsd as the host? Is there any documentation or guides that helped you a lot with bhyve? #bhyve #vm #netbsd

@matthew I'm not sure I understand your question, do you want to know if it is possible to run a NetBSD VM on a FreeBSD host with bhyve, or a FreeBSD VM on a NetBSD host?Either way, NetBSD has both the NVMM and Xen hypervisors, so it should work both ways.

Thanks. And I think the reverse is also true: a Debian system running in a bhyve VM on a NetBSD host. I haven't done it, but I am interested in experimenting more with NetBSD.

From what I understand, OmniOS is the actively used descendant of Sun Solaris. https://omnios.org/#unix #solaris #omniOS

@matthew @subnetspider I guess I haven't tried to see that NetBSD supports nested virtualization, but that would be interesting to see if it does work

@matthew @subnetspider It is one. OmniOS is an illumos distribution. There's other cool and unique illumos distributions like SmartOS and Tribblix and OpenIndiana

Do you know the difference between OmniOS and OpenIndiana? Why would someone choose one over the other? I am guessing that OmniOS has some type of paid support offering.

@matthew @stratacast @subnetspider #OpenIndiana is desktop focussed.#OmniOS is single-server-or-VM-guest focussed.#SmartOS is hypervisor-focussed.All are #illumos distributions. I know SmartOS has paid-support options (though usually we support #Triton Data Center deployments).Also #illumos distros include dedicated appliance/device user like @oxidecomputer 's Helios or RackTop's BrickStore.That help?

@matthew @subnetspider OpenIndiana has a desktop focus where OmniOS has a server focus. Also yes, OmniOS does have support contract options

@matthew @stratacast @subnetspider like the others mentioned in the thread they are open source decents/derivatives via OpenSolaris. Oracle Solaris 11.x is also a decent of OpenSolairs and while it isn’t open source it is very much still in development on SPARC and x86 and we just recently provided an updated free to use build https://blogs.oracle.com/solaris/post/announcing-a-new-oracle-solaris-environment-for-developers which also improves the AMD CPU support.

@danmcd @matthew @stratacast @subnetspider @oxidecomputer I would say OpenIndiana is not focused on Desktops, it’s more general purpose in the same spirit as Solaris was a long time.
