       Hi all, there was some controversy yesterday about one of our mods, @Anachron . He wrote a blog that wasn't received well by the fediverse. Anachron will be stepping down. I think this is the right decision at this moment. I'll post our reasoning here.

       @Gina thanks for making these difficult decisions. From experience, I know it's hard and it feels like giving in sometimes, but the Fediverse can't afford more drama.

       I'd like to be open and transparent about this; I read his blog before accepting him into the mod group. To me his thoughts felt like the other end of the spectrum of what we find acceptable for our community; the first end being strict modding to keep everyone safe, with the risk of hurting plurality of thought, the other end protecting freedom of speech with the risk of hurting marginalized people. This is a tension that mods constantly have to balance.

       Fosstodon is meant to be a space where people feel safe and welcome. We don't tolerate hate, harassment, or dehumanization. Trust in moderators matters. It’s reasonable to expect that those with power in a community be held to a higher standard. ~Impact over intentions.~ A moderator must be someone people feel safe approaching - not someone who stirs uncertainty. For this reason, I think Anachron stepping away is the right decision at this moment.
