@peter I’m actually kind of horrified at how many nasty comments there are on this post. Yeah of COURSE LLMs shouldn’t be trusted, but “haha sucks to be him, he deserved it” is a real shitty take. Be mad at the industry that made and promoted the monster, not the monster’s victims.

@twylo @peter Indeed. The corporations work hard to make everything feel like your own responsibility. They're keen on "recycling plastics" as well.Somehow "product safety" doesn't apply to this domain. Move fast and break everyone's stuff. (Underpants gnome version, though.)

@krutonium @dawngreeter @peter this this this thisthe manpages are awful and inaccessible documentation if you don't already know what you are looking for. A relic of computing decades long past.

@dragonarchitect @krutonium @peter the manpage is just documentation and was never meant to be a tutorial

@peter standard script rules apply. Know what you are running and make a copy before doing anything potentially destructive.Everyone learns their lesson. The vibe coders are just joining the club 😄

@simonoid @peter I botched a shell command a couple of weeks ago and lost more than an hour's work. Deleted a bunch of scanned images instead of renaming them (well, renamed them all to the same thing, which had the effect of deleting all but the last one). Cursed myself, all the way through the process of re-scanning, for not adequately checking what I had written before running it.
