I want a graffiti drone. I'm thinking we seriously need a graffiti drone. Text and line art.Monocolor OK, aerosol can, solenoid system to squirt. Hell I can do that.Stroke based? Dot matrix? Single pass? Single drone? Multiple drones? Single more practical for small crews/loners.

@tomjennings meshed collab drones you can gather for big group projects that can then go back to being individual based for quick tagging. Side note ...repurposed roombas for postering (preloaded wheat paste, scrounged Avery office supplies,...)

The sheer number and positioning of anti-grafitti drones in web search tells a lot. I think text writing drones could could huge impact for opposition communication. And safe and distributed.

@tomjennings This is a horrific idea. Also, you will probably want to have a long stem with a nozzle to get the spray away from the fan thrust. Better than an aerosol can would be a COâ‚‚ cylinder & paint tank. Airbrush parts would work for a lot of that. Software would need to use the camera to actively stabilize the drone position relative to the surface.

@tomjennings Stencils. No programming required and applies much faster than writing/printing.

@tomjennings Ooh, like Joshua Kinberg's 2004 Bikes against Bush: https://youtu.be/URS_7FY4krU?si=xMEQyTErPDXboynK but with drones.

@tomjennings The Graffiti Research Lab did a lot of cool projects back in the day (2000's) https://graffitiresearchlab.com/blog/ which came out of the Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.) lab https://fffff.at

@skewray @tomjennings I've messed a bit with this, and yes, long stem on the nozzle just like WD40 cans seems to be able to get the spray outside the area where the rotor airflow is the worst. Other people have talked about using enclosed rotors, but you could make an interesting quadcopter that's really long, two rotors on either end and a half meter between them where there's no real airflow from the rotors.A BIG one with something hanging down could do dot-matrix printing in a hurry.

@skewray @tomjennings though tbh my main interest is in one that can use flash photography to find near-specular reflections from lenses (there was a 2014 paper on this) and then spray the lenses with paint.

@smellsofbikes @skewray Ooh these are good ideas. Long ago I considered making a handheld device with multiple nozzles and four wheels, youd rolls the little car thing across a surface and it would spray out text dot matrix style, adapting as it could to velocity. Paint delivery is not trivial. So maybe I'll work on w remote nozzle system. That's a core issue.

@jerod23 Yes and very effective. The San Francisco trick of old drum heads as stencils, taped onto the bottom of a paper shopping bag with handles with a big hole in the bottom, as camouflage. You set the bag down, pickup the can inside, spray and pickup and leave. Clandestine and cheeeep.

@tomjennings @skewray I've seen people implement dot matrix chalk dust or water spray dispensers in bike-towed trailers and get pretty good image transfers. My use case was as noted mostly blocking rather than decorative.

@tomjennings Some years back, I came across Niklas Roy hard at work at a grafitti wall in Berlin. https://niklasroy.com/graffomat/ For gnarly details, see https://github.com/royrobotiks/GraffomatA collaboration with a geek drone collective might kickstart this!
