@futurebird @holsta For all their faults, dating apps are a "place" where you can encounter people you wouldn't otherwise cross paths with, and a higher than average proportion of them are probably looking for a relationship. The apps are obviously designed with the business interests first, but you can still get lucky. Pubs, sports clubs, or whatever are also not designed for anyone's romantic success.

@futurebird I've not checked the scene in years, but I met my wife of 10 years via eHarmony in 2008. I did a quick scan of changes in the company since then, and it looks like they made substantial changes in 2016-2018 that would inherently make matches considerably looser. Presumably to make the sign-up process easier/a lower entry barrier to get more people's money.

My future wife was looking at the site with a friend to poke fun at the posers when she came across my profile and decided she liked what she saw. Got a DM from her not long after that. We chatted for a bit in messaging, shortly bumped it up to phone calls, and then had a movie date so there would be less talking and therefore less awkwardness. Never looked back.I never had success with other paying customers on the site. In fact, most of it was traumatic. But the same could be said for my dating life with people I met IRL before that.

@futurebird I tried my damndest to meet my future partner online. I online dated before online dating services. I treated it like a job application, a numbers game. Probably 2% conversion rate to dating the men I met (those were usually only a few months too). I finally met my husband at work when I turned 31. We were just friends at first but I was open to friendship by that time. And friends for the win. That was the smartest decision I ever made.

@futurebird we met during graduate school, but each one had couples of their own and we had friends in common. When I was done with my PhD but waiting for my diploma, I started to go out with a group of people every Friday night to get tacos but everyone else stopped showing up and we kept going out. It was easy to talk to him and he made me laugh. We married like a year afterwards. We've been married 5 years now and it's been wonderful.

@futurebird Met in 86. I had free passes to a restaurant. Went with friends who also enjoyed free food. Handed the passes to the cute cashier and she passed them back. "Twice as free!" Cashier asked one of my friends about me and let it be known she had concert tix, i just had to ask. A week later we were at the rose bowl watching depeche mode. Tonight we are at simple minds concert with our daughter.

@futurebird Met my wife 34 years ago when I was living in a Jewish co-op during college and a woman who was renting one of the rooms for the summer was hosting her friend for her college orientation weekend.I was actually away at an event for the weekend, burst in the door Saturday night soaking wet from biking home in pouring rain, and my first words before even being introduced to my wife were, "why are all the nice girls in this town either not Jewish or 'taken'?"Married 31 years, 5 kids.

@futurebird I met my wife in college. She was dating a friend who complained about her incessantly - always desperate to get her to "commit" (put out). He eventually dumped her, but I stayed friends with her, and after a year passed, we started spending more time together. I don't know what he was complaining about. (Didn't know what he had.) @futurebird @RnDanger OkCupid was odd about 13 years ago. I didn't meet a lot of people, but those I met could've become good friends (but nothing much more).It does tell me that their approach of "fill out endless/weird questionaires and we'll match them" seems to work on the interest level, I suppose. I'm not sure about the rest.Luckily I met my better half and didn't have to look further 😊 Not through that service, though.
