People working on Linux or the BSDs (or illumos based OSes, etc), are you using two monitors? And, if so, what do you use them for? I'm trying to understand if it makes sense to keep two monitors on my deskPlease boost#Linux #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #illumos #SmartOS #OmniOS #IT #SysAdmin

@stefano One monitor, 2poor do laptop and only have TVs for external displays which are too big for good use. I love having extra scratch space on the desktop, I'd love a proper second monitor.

@stefanoAnd of I could add a third monitor, I would! One for a browser, one for command line (tiled into several ptys) and file manager (also tiled), one for the sound editor or spreadsheet or image editor or whatever it is I'm really working on. And I usually keep a media player (online radio) and an email/calendar client running in some other workspaces (virtual desktops).@ParadeGrotesque

@bobjonkman @stefano @ParadeGrotesque Yeah, got 3 here, 2 horizontal and one vertical (comfy for documents and some of the web).Although one of the horizontal monitors isn't always on.

@stefano I voted for one monitor, but also have a second monitor. Having 2 is very practical, usually first monitor is where the coding or sysadmin takes place, and second is for reference, docs or note taking.

@stefano I have two monitors, but one - a 32" TV, is not on my desk, and most of the time isn't on. I use it for watching movies in bed, biggening small windows, and sometimes just having two windows side by side. Used to do that a lot at my old job, where I got my first taste of dual monitors. The TV causes occasional problems because of its stupid smatness and the fact that I have them plugged into the video card in the wrong order (funky port/adapter compromises).

@stefano One for active work, one for things to keep track of (email, chat, etc.)and honestly, sometimes a 3rd for a web browser.

@stefano With virtual screens I only need 1 monitor. I see people at work that use 2 or more monitors. On one they have an active email client. The other for work.To me, I can see using 2 monitors for debugging GUI or cursor screens. One for the screen the other for stepping through a debugger. I had no need for that, but I could see it being useful.

@stefano It depends...When doing CAD/creative type stuff one screen is the 3D render, the other is the work space. When DevOops'ing, typically one is dev/pre-prod and the other is prod. This way I'm less likely to make 'wrong terminal' mistakes. Sometimes looks more like a coding session below, depending...When just messing around or doing general reseearch or continuing ed. one is browser sessions, terminals, etc. while the other is email/social.When coding one is docs/web pages while the other is the actual coding session.I don't regret having two screens.HTH

@stefano For me, multiple monitors are too distracting. Besides, I'm old fashioned. I'm used to switching between applications as I work.
