@chiraag @jwilker @scifi @bookstodon Why shouldn't authors and other artists be protected from theft?

@farbel @chiraag @scifi @bookstodon DRM doesn’t really protect us as much as It just annoys legit owners. I don’t use DRM on any of my books and strip it from those I buy.

@glitzersachen @viq @jwilker @chiraag @scifi @bookstodon I'm a lot older than digital books, and music for that matter. I'm willing to wager that everyone whining about DRM has never paid an artist one penny for their music.

@farbel @glitzersachen @viq @jwilker @scifi @bookstodon I absolutely have (earlier we use to buy CDs, now I buy stuff from Qobuz, which is DRM-free and high quality).I highly prefer DRM-free ebooks, but I will sometimes buy DRM ebooks and crack the DRM to ensure I actually own the file and that my book can't just disappear. I don't share those files.Maybe don't make assumptions.

by stealing rights from the rest of us? no, that's not cool at all, even if there was any relationship between distributors who exploit authors and readers imposing DRM and authors getting paid.it's not theft when I lend a book to a friend, is it? it's not theft when I read parts of the book out loud to the class. it's not theft when I copy paragraphs for commentary. these are readers' rights that DRM platforms steals from us, on top of stealing control over our own computers from us.CC: @chiraag@mastodon.online @jwilker@wandering.shop @scifi@a.gup.pe @bookstodon@a.gup.pe
