I'm really concerned about the future of #DoctorWho and I can't help but see a lot of parallels between current Who and the end of Classic Who.Doctor Who has always had a strength in changing things up. Changing companions, changing Doctors, changing GENRES, changing writers, and changing lead writers/executive producers.Since 2005, we've had 3 transitions to new showrunners. I'd argue only 1 transition was unproblematic....(1/8)

RTD -> Moff was pretty good. Moffat had multiple well received episodes over multiple seasons. Moff -> Chibbers was more problematic. Chibnall had not written an episode of Doctor Who in nearly 5 years when he was given the position. Additionally, for some reason, they decided to lock in a person who was still on another job. Maybe this happens all the time in TV idk, but I'm concerned that the role has gotten too much(2/8)

In most jobs, if you're begging your current staff to stay on until someone new comes in (which we know happened with Moffat's last season), that position is problematic. I see this all the time where I work. We have people with certain knowledge of how things work and the company is constantly begging them to not retire so we don't lose their knowledge. (mainframes suck!)(3/8)

On top of that, Moffat admitted he had to wine and dine Chibbers to take the position. Why? Why not go with someone else?Anyways. Once Chibbers leaves, we get a great big surprise! RTD is back!Uh.... Doctor Who is now at the point where the only person who can run it is someone who's already done it? What happens next? Doctor Who needs fresh blood. I'm not saying RTD/Moffat/Chibs can't come back, but have them be one offs.(4/8)

The last time Doctor Who was in a position where the show runner was such a cursed position was with JNT in the classic era. JNT wanted to go off and do other things, the BBC wouldn't let him. He had to run the show or it was going to be cancelled. Is Doctor Who there now? RTD has to run it or it's going to be cancelled? The JNT era also relied very heavily on the show's past.(5/8)

In the last 2 years, RTD seems very eager to bring back long dead ideas as the big pull to the show. Sutekh. The Rani. Even Susan. I've had to explain all three of those to people so much that I'm worried. If people have to ask uber nerds like me to understand the show, that's a dying show.I wasn't alive during the end of the classic era. I didn't live through it, but I can't help but see the parallels.(6/?)

Both now and the end of Classic Who are run by (apparently) irreplaceable people. Both now and the end of Classic who rested very heavily on the show's past as heavy plot points rather than just one-liners.TBH, I am more concerned about Doctor Who's future than ever before. I really want to see some fresh blood runnign the show. New ideas. New perspectives. (7/8)

I also think that the Doctor Who show runner position needs to stop being a single person. RTD, Moff, and Chib have all talked about how rough of a position it is.I want this show to continue and thrive, but for the first time, I'm not sure it's happening. As much as I've always loved the idea of Susan and the Rani coming back, I don't know if it should've. We shall see....(8/8)
