why is the page I'm testing on multiple VMs (with no copy/paste) using a 97-character URL?better question: are there any link shorteners that will still work on Netscape Navigator 4?

@foone as much of a ride this thread was (and I loved it), and nothing at all to do with your journey.... I was stuck by the random throught: I feel like "webpage validator" is something that has been solved before now... no?Like you know how browser compatibility has things like the ACID test etc? I'd have thought there'd be a foss script or tool that would rate your page against every browser engine. Like you give it a URL and it spits out a report showing backwards render compat%.

@foone Ah, these dialog boxes. I recall them also being very useless, only saying things like "[object] expected" or "undefined is not a function". They were so bad that, at a previous workplace, we made as much as possible of the website work on Firefox (that website required ActiveX for video streaming, so it only worked on MSIE) *just to get better JS error messages when things broke*.
