@h_albermannThere is no reason to believe the corp that runs it will not do what all other corps do. No reason at all. @janerationx

@janerationx >run for the sole purpose of serving a communityI wish people would get this rhetoric out of their head, instances are just gateways to the fediverse. I run a general purpose node, it is not meant for a specific demographic. Instances should not be oriented to one specific community, that is encouraging people to constantly look at the local timeline and nothing more.

@nyanide @janerationx its ok though. if u get a bunch of people together it becomes more of like a public groupchat at a certain point. chedi works great for that

@janerationx @musicman nope. the corporations are not social at all.we are social media in that we collectively decide what media we consume. that really matters in pushing back against the power of money to dominate society.social networking is more group tech ala discord.

@wjmaggos I get what you are saying but that's just not correct as stated. Social media definition: "Interactive forms of media that allow users to interact with and publish to each other, generally by means of the Internet."Xitter, meta stuff fall 100% in that category.I think the problem people have with those platforms is the algos over emphasize celebs but facebook still works if you just don't follow celebs and businesses. Haven't used xitter regularly in...idk, feels like a decade

@musicman Sure but I was responding to the argument in the post.there's confusion here imo re community vs posting publicly like a website. (on the corporate platforms, you add in the layer of us being products sold to their advertisers.) and also here, people think of an instance as a place but it's more a gateway (that also provides some moderation protection) to the shared fedi.it's complicated. if we had better private group tech, people wouldn't be trying to get that here as much imo.

@musicman I've seen this argument before. They tend to use media to mean "other people" get to push stuff on us. And that's bad. I strongly agree that the pushing is bad but media imo is just public art/info. I can agree that networking is sharing art/info among people you know or they know. But what we do here is not private nor do we know the journalists/artists whose work goes viral. The info/art can come from anywhere but what's special is the chain of sharing is predominantly trusted.

@wjmaggos yeah, I think a better distinction would be "social mass media"

@musicman but why?I imagine all media being on the web eventually and social media being how we direct attention to it. old mass media being dead.and social networking being email, texts, groups etca term for corporate algo driven stuff that sounds bad would be great to have tho.

@wjmaggos because it's designed for celebs. It's a push model.

@wjmaggos not to say mass media hasn't changed. Certainly Netflix is different than OTA CBS but you don't comment and discuss on Netflix, but you do on xitter

@musicman sorry, I want this to be mass too. I want everyone here. many don't. I want everything to be able to start small and go as big as the public decides. I don't see the need for that word here. no distinction necessary. something between friends but visible to everyone can become "mass" media. nobody has to press and ship another run of records.
