#FEMA cuts #emergency training under #Trump as #hurricane season loomsThe #US federal disaster agency FEMA has sharply reduced training for state & local emergency managers ahead of the start of the hurricane season on June 1, acc/to current & fmr ofcls, memos seen by Reuters, & 3 sources familiar w/the situation. The training cutbacks will leave #storm-prone communities less prepared to handle the often devastating aftermath of #hurricanes.#ExtremeWeather #Climate https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/fema-cuts-emergency-training-hurricane-season-looms-2025-05-11/

Leading forecasters predict a busier-than-average #Atlantic #hurricane season this year, with 17 named #TropicalStorms, including 9 hurricanes. If state directors & local emergency managers are not briefed on the federal government's latest tools & resources, it will impact their ability to prepare for & warn communities of impending #storms, said Deanne Criswell, who headed #FEMA during President Joe #Biden's admin.#ExtremeWeather #Climate #ClimateChange #disasters

Some 2,000 #FEMA employees—or about ⅓ of full-time staff—were fired or accepted incentives to quit since #Trump took office & declared the agency should be abolished & its functions handed over to the states.Last week, Trump fired FEMA's acting chief, Cameron Hamilton, a day after he told lawmakers that the agency should be preserved.Hamilton's successor, David Richardson, told FEMA employees on Friday that he would "run right over" any staff opposed to his implementation of Trump's vision.

#FEMA's National #Hurricane Program & the National Hurricane Center typically conduct in-person workshops & presentations for state & local #emergency ofcls each spring to help them prepare for hurricane season. These training sessions are used to share the latest data on hurricane modeling, build relationships between local, state & FEMA ofcls to improve coordination on #disaster preparedness & relief, & review evacuation routes & other planning measures.#Trump #ExtremeWeather #Climate

@Nonilex I can't imagine facing this season's wildfire and hurricane season doing the disaster work I used to do without a functioning FEMA.

Relationship building is critical for coordination in the event of a #storm, acc/to 3 emergency managers & experts. Some planned hurricane training sessions & workshops have been moved online.#FEMA, which is overseen by #DHS Secy #KristiNoem, confirmed the training cutbacks in a statement to Reuters:"At the direction of President #Trump & Secretary Noem, we're done offering duplicate trainings that promote *waste*, *fraud* & *abuse* & that are not a good use of American taxpayers.”#Climate

"The National #Hurricane Program continues to deliver readiness trainings ahead of the 2025 Hurricane Season to emergency managers nationwide with virtual trainings,” Noem’s stmnt cont.Steve Still, the emergency manager for New Hanover County, a hurricane hotspot on North Carolina's Atlantic Coast, said online training, while useful, was less effective than in-person events."If there's any practical applications or exercises, you need in-person training," Still said.#Trump #ExtremeWeather

Since Feb 5, #FEMA staff have been barred from travel unrelated to #disaster deployment & other limited purposes. Since early March, staff must have their speaking engagements & presentation materials approved by the Office of External Affairs & Office of Chief Counsel, acc/to 2 internal memos.Few speaking requests have been approved, leading the National #Hurricane Program to cancel some trainings for #emergency managers in #storm-prone areas or move them online.#Trump #ExtremeWeather

Organizers of April's National #Hurricane Conference in #NewOrleans canceled several #FEMA-led sessions - including one aimed at helping #emergency managers make #evacuation decisions during #hurricanes - after FEMA staff dropped out due to the travel restrictions, said John Wilson, chair of the conference.Wilson said the director of the NHC usually speaks at the conference about lessons learned from past hurricane seasons & shares forecasting model updates, but did not this year.#Trump

Lynn Budd, president of the National #Emergency Management Association, an organization of #state emergency managers, & director of the #Wyoming Office of Homeland #Security, said #states need more time & resources if they are expected to make up for cuts to #FEMA staff & activities."There is room to reduce the footprint of FEMA in their regular deployment activities, but there is also expertise provided by FEMA for state & local jurisdictions that the states simply don’t have at this time.”

@Nonilex I did a #FEMA training on risk mitigation for built structures in San Francisco a while back ( the training was in Colorado, the example of risk was SanFran). It was free, three 8 hour days working in R identifying spatial clusters of at risk structures, hundreds of pages of reading and assessing the cost benefits of mitigation strategies and finally delivering a report on recommendations as the final work product. I live in #Colorado and I have relatives in Wyoming who've been there for years. The likelihood that #Wyoming has the expertise to replace even that single training is vanishingly small. They don't have the same risks as San Francisco of course but the needs and skills to handle the risks they do have are not robust. UW at Laramie is reasonable but the state reaches out to Colorado for its public health technical workers as an example. It's idiotic to ask states to replicate technical expertise where that expertise is already present, supported by tax dollars and available for free with a little planning! That's just dumb.

@Nonilex Is there a threshold of body counts that will make people in the US wake up and realise what is going on here? If we were to answer that question and consider the civilian toll of the Israel gaza war there are two figures, the number killed / abducted on Oct 7 (<3000) or the number of palestians killed (50,000+) or maybe the number killed in the US as a result of guns, or how many die as a result of not being able to access healthcare.I can't believe for a minute that a large proportion of the US population has such a low view of the value of human life. It will be an interesting weather season if people are not warned about extreme weather, what also concerns me is places such as florida which is a tourist destination, as guests in your country we expect to be safe, lack of weather warnings alone, would concern me greatly.

@Nonilex Agreed in person is far better, esp as you are working with others and need to be able to coordinate at ground level.
