#Harvard Leaders See Only Bad Outcomes Ahead as They Battle #TrumpHarvard could choose to either keep fighting or seek a deal with the administration. Its leaders are starting to realize that any path will very likely change the identity of the #school.#law #democracy #Constitution #FirstAmendment #AcademicFreedom https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/us/harvard-trump-court-case-negotiation.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=p&pvid=814FFA48-EC25-4E32-A188-FF13D7A72AC6

#HarvardUniversity became the leader of #academia’s resistance to the #Trump admin—& soaked in acclaim from the White House’s critics—when it refused a roster of intrusive demands & took the govt to court last month.#Legal experts saw a strong case, built by a team of elite conservative lawyers, to win back billions of #research dollars that the govt had stripped away. Supporters cheered on #Harvard’s unusually sharp public tone.#law #democracy #Constitution #FirstAmendment #AcademicFreedom

@Nonilex As usual, the NYTimes is shitting all over democracy and not supporting the fight against fascism wherever it may be.There has to be a positive attitude, otherwise Harvard wouldn't have told them to fuck off.

…But behind the scenes, several senior officials at #Harvard & on its top governing board believe that the #university is confronting a crisis that could last until #Trump is out of power, acc/to 3 people involved in the discussions. Even if Harvard’s #legal case is successful, these officials say, the school will still face enormous troubles that may force the nation’s oldest & wealthiest university to rethink its identity & scale.#law #democracy #Constitution #FirstAmendment #AcademicFreedom

Any outcome seems likely to lead to significant cuts to #Harvard’s #research & #workforce & undermine its pre-eminence for years. Without its sprawling research apparatus, there is a fear that it could become more like a small, teaching-focused liberal arts college.#University leaders believe the only clear options are either working w/ #Trump or somehow securing huge sums of money quickly, perhaps from private donors….#law #democracy #Constitution #FirstAmendment #AcademicFreedom

The crosscurrents are unlike any that the #university has faced in its modern history. For centuries, #Harvard has cherished its #independence, its swaggering pride & its record of #academic excellence. But #Trump has reveled in unleashing #chaos that many believe will be difficult to contain as long as he sees the #university as a target. On Mon, the Trump admin intensified the clash & threatened to choke off #grant money to Harvard indefinitely.#law #democracy #Constitution #AcademicFreedom

“They can make your life unpleasant, even if they’re violating the #law & a court ultimately determines they’re violating the law,”said Samuel Bagenstos, who was general counsel of #HHS under #Biden.#Harvard declined to comment, but the dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Harvard’s largest division, acknowledged the scale of the problems….“These federal actions have set in motion changes that will not be undone, at least not in the foreseeable future,”said dean Hopi E. Hoekstra….

@Nonilex Too bad the NYTimes will never own up to the collateral damage they foisted upon society. Somehow it is only Harvard that is to blame for these outcomes.

@Nonilex Bending the knee is never the answer. Haven’t they learned that by now?So, scale down. Go find other investors. Use the endowment. FIGHT.

@Nonilex Every university in the U.S. is or will soon face the same dilemma as Harvard. What they are seeing is that dependency on major outside financial support always comes with strings attached. This was always known, but never has it been reified so brutally. The (very) few institutions that are like Harvard have the resources to fight back and hold out for better days. Regardless, the toll will be heavy and all face irrevocable change. Wealthy endowments or not, each university will have to answer the question of what they wish to preserve in an indefinite future. The social value of academia to humanity requires independence, specifically, the ability to think, study, speak, write and teach based on independent critical thinking and unhindered creativity. This should be at the top of their list.
