@mastodonmigrationI've been trying to ride that line of advocacy without being too annoying. my vision for this place gives me so much hope but I know it ruffles some feathers. forever open to discussing it with anyone. just keep swimming I guess.

@mastodonmigration I get the sense that his heart is with us but he is trying to keep them from becoming antagonistic towards us. same with Cory. I fully expect AT folks to get worse and worse relatively soon and it will be interesting to see how everyone deals with that.

@mastodonmigration this is why I'm big on what I think @Jeremiah is working on. making it super easy to automatically fund media and services (almost) as we use them, directly without a middleman or crypto, and at amounts we choose. I think given that, people will ramp that amount up to make these endeavors sustainable but without creating democracy distorting concentrations of wealth. decentralization will force continual competition, which will prevent enshittification etc. part of the dream

@mastodonmigration @wjmaggos fwiw I think making money on public social media for writers, developers etc is entirely feasible and the optimum path. The hard part is getting everyone to agree on the same path/model for monetization.

@mike @mastodonmigration it's gotta be direct support but we need to make that easier. a protocol and API for direct and automated fiat transfer.there's always alternatives so paywalls fail.and advertising perverts what we are doing here, letting people manage their attention. often via community decision making ala boosts, but here you should never have to see stuff cause other people paid to make you do so.

@mastodonmigration @mike everybody has a banking app. I think if you could open it up and put in something like a fedi/email address and then $5 in the pay field, that would be huge. And maybe more importantly, see a section listing everybody you pay monthly. many more would feel more comfortable with this model. Instead of losing track of all your subscriptions like we do now.And eventually, an API that lets you set a monthly amount to distribute based on %/time reported by our media apps.

@mastodonmigration @wjmaggosI understand your concerns here. While not waving away your legit questions like viability of true federation with AT Proto, I do think it's important to work from a baseline of what I believe the facts are regarding Bluesky's ownership and motivation. I think this will help us triangulate better on legit technical/implementation questions.First, regarding who owns the company, I think it's highly likely that it is still majority owned by the employees at this stage in their startup's life. While I don't have any inside information here, based on what I know about startup financing, Jay Graber and her team are almost certainly the ones in control of Bluesky and making the decisions for its future. And while the firm that invested in Bluesky has also invested in crypto businesses, that does not mean that somehow Bluesky is a bunch of crypto bros or is planning to go deep into crypto. The closest thing they've done here is embrace DIDs (a W3C standard) which I actually think is a smart move for account portability.Second, based on my conversations with Jay and her team I can vouch that they are quite genuine about their belief in advancing the open social web. More importantly they've demonstrated that with the work they've shipped so far and the support they've given to developers big and small. While there are reasonable technical questions re: their protocol decisions, etc. I think their integrity as people is high and their heart is in the right place.Third, the developer ecosystem on AT Proto is quite vibrant and working toward the same goals as the ActivityPub developer ecosystem. Check out some of the talks from the Atmosphere conference to see this. I especially recommend Rudy Fraser's talk about Blacksky. It's inspiring. Finally, while it's quite unfortunate Bluesky elected to build their own protocol rather than build from ActivityPub, I believe they did so for what they believed are legitimate scaling and technical concerns. They've since innovated in some clever ways (account portability, custom feeds, composable moderation) that are useful to understand for anyone building on the open social web. The reality is that both protocols have their strengths and weaknesses and I hope we can learn from both as we further build on our shared vision.

@mastodonmigration @wjmaggos good question re: the Bain capital round. I don't have any inside information on this but it's entirely possible the round never happened or has dragged on (there could be a long closing process) and has not closed yet. I guess it's also possible the round happened and they've not yet disclosed it though that would be a bit odd as these things are ultimately a matter of public record. Could be that this deal finally closed a few weeks ago and that they will announce it in conjunction with some other news. Again, I'm totally speculating here. I agree with you that transparency around their financing situation is pretty important to establish trust.

@wjmaggos @mastodonmigration I need to learn more about this. Will ask next time I speak with them.
