       @cjd This reminds me of a popular motorsport in Sweden where you race with old, regular, beat up cars. All cars must be offered for sale for about €1000 after a competition.

       That reminds me a bit of the 24 Hours of Lemons ("lemon" = junk car) in the US. They have a spending limit, but they don't enforce it via a buyout rule. I think the judges can buy your car though if they think you over-spent.
