As a composer and conductor of music for film and TV it irritates me that violinists obsessively over-use vibrato. If I want vibrato, I will advise on the score or verbally in rehearsal. Don't add it unless you're instructed.

@BonehouseWasps @anon_opin I think I know what Anon means. Some violinists seem to like showing it off like a kid who has learned a new skill (poorly).

@mansr @anon_opin Absolutely. I don't have much experience with violin but it's become ubiquitous in guitar and bass, too.

@BonehouseWasps @mansr @anon_opin I dunno...i asked a professional classical cellist I know who plays for an orchestra and she said:"I disagree…. We use vibrato almost all the time in this day and age."

@BonehouseWasps @Haikyoneko @anon_opin If it was supposed to be a joke, I missed it too. I just found it amusing that the cellist "disagreed" only to then go on to confirm that they indeed do exactly that.

@mansr @BonehouseWasps @anon_opin she disagreed with the idea they shouldn't do it, not that they do it.She's saying the op is wrong.

@Haikyoneko @BonehouseWasps @anon_opin Right.Anon: "You do it too much."Cellist: "Oh no, we do it all the time."There's some strange disconnect here, and I found it amusing.

@mansr @BonehouseWasps @anon_opinMore like:Anon "you do it too much"Cellist: "no, it's normal to do it that much nowadays, you're wrong".

@Haikyoneko @BonehouseWasps @anon_opin The fact that it's normal doesn't make Anon wrong. Quite the opposite, actually.

@mansr @BonehouseWasps @anon_opinReally? Why do you say that?I mean, a professional musician (principle cellist in a high level orchestra) says he's wrong. Why do you disagree with them?

@Haikyoneko @BonehouseWasps @anon_opin Anon claims to be a professional composer and says their works are being performed wrong. I'm siding with the composer here because they presumably know best how they intend their works to be performed and also because I too find all that vibrato irritating.

@mansr @BonehouseWasps @anon_opin you understand there isn't a "correct" way to perform any piece of music, right? Different conductors, different musicians, different days, different venue, different humidity will change the sound of a piece from one performance to the next.Music scores are covered with markings where musicians and conductors decide how to play it. You think the world's greatest soloists read the score and just play it as is?
