Today I found my EDR's firewall will effectively block xn--*.* (but weirdly formatted). I've pleaded with my firewall, proxy and sase vendors for the last 10 years to do this."Regex is too much compute" they said, all-the-while while they deploy LLM / AI / agentic . Gas lit much?

@badsamurai depends how cheap the hardware they want to run on is. regexps -can- be onerous on memory or compute, depending on how strong the engine is and how optimized it is. i remember looking in to implementing them before and there are a ton of tradeoffs. some of which make all searches slower but ensure consistent complexity regardless of the actual expression.
