I wonder if anyone has written code to figure out how to modify a QR code with a minimum of changes, to make it point to a url you control?Like, "sharpie in a pixel here and here, and now that MLM sticker on the stop sign goes to goatse"

@foone “what is the New traveling salesman problem?”Ohh, how about “Towers of Annoy”

@fooneNot trivial with the error correction and redundency in QR codes. This is a working QR code after all.

@fooneReally depends on the redundency/error correction level selected when it was generated. If it's basically 1 it should be pretty straight forward but most generators probably don't create such simple codes.Switching a single character with 6 to 10 modifications shouldn't be too hard though, but do you really want to buy a new domain for each different code code?

@foone No, but that does give me the idea to sabotage QR codes I don't like by sharpie'ing pixels onto random spots.Well, it DID before I thought to look up whether QR codes have any kind of error correction (they do).

@foone seems reminiscent of hacks that padded files to match a checksum. Forcing to a desired url might suck (not enough bits in a qr, plus it’s intrinsic error correction). Forcing to where new qr (including error correction) was a url, though…. Seems possible.

@foone Russ Cox wrote an article about QR code hacking - not exactly what you describe, but he explains the math behind it and you may be able to figure out your idea from that.https://research.swtch.com/qart

@foone I was thinking about this the other way, minimal changes to existing popular images to turn them into functional QR codes

@foone Well fuck, I had thought about many QR things, but that is actually a good idea.Error correction is a problem, but not a big one. In the end it means that you need to flip 3 or so pixels in order to flip a data bit.The biggest obstacle is that a QR code has more parameters than are typically available in QR code generation APIs, specifically the mask, which affects almost all pixels.

@foone just sticking a different QR code on top of the existing would be much easier.

@foone I worked on a project in which we found 3 methods on how to make a QR code unusable with a minimum of changes, but to make it point seems like a whole different challenge. I am having lots of checking the replies

@foone if it doesn’t exist, that sounds really interesting, but also finding the targets could be difficult…It does sound like a cool thing to build though…

@foone there's an AI model to generate QR codes from images. actually at least 2, one is far more impressive.https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/06/redditor-creates-working-anime-qr-codes-using-stable-diffusion/https://www.qrblend.com/
