       So first thing I do when I open the platform is look at the federated timeline and 90% of it is from accounts who use a nickname or a pseudonym online and I still get blowback about living in the US and not using my real name here, even though many people know what it is anyway.It’s a weird flex. The Fediverse would close in 3 minutes flat if someone wanted to turn it into “papers please.”Nobody here owes anyone their personal details or any other information they don’t want to make public.

       @TonyStark I have never put my name on social media and I never will. I used to have a picture of myself at a march but it was far enough away you wouldn’t see my face. This is all anyone is getting. I work with the same white people who are part of the problem. They can’t get me here.

       @TonyStark I’m always shocked at how many people use their real names and post all sorts of personal info on sites like Facebook.My first “social networking” experience was IRC. Then there was Usenet and a lot of web forums. FB and Twitter never had an appeal to me at all. Fediverse feels like the true successor to those platforms.It’s more about the exchange of ideas than about showing off your abs or your car.

       @TonyStark I started out in the mid 90s on BBSs, and you just picked a nick. Then most forums you used a nick, so when I hit FB, it was natural to use my nickname. Anyone who really wants to find me could if they had any skills, but why? I have nothing, nothing to steal nothing to hide.

       @TonyStark I was just Puck, but I joined Second Life and you had to pick a last name from a list, so from then on I had a last name. Half my friends just call me Puck in skin life.
