I often don't agree with Vardi's writing but he's correct here. furthermore, by helping get Trump elected, silicon valley bears significant responsibility for our ongoing catastrophe. so while it's very late for silicon valley to grow a fucking spine, today would be better than neverhttps://cacm.acm.org/opinion/big-tech-you-need-academia-speak-up/

@regehr Unfortunately, silicon valley is not what it used to be when I grew up there. It has been taken over by VC culture, and the loudest VC voices are in love with cryptocurrency and effective accelerationism. Trump has promised much lighter regulation of tech in general, and has completely gutted any regulation of crypto (which he's currently profiting from, including selling access to the president for cryptocurrency purchases that benefit him).

@dan131riley @regehr Yeah I feel like we are reaching the culmination of the transformation of the tech industry that started with the dot-com boom, and likewise the Republican Party is reaching the culmination of its transformation that started with the Regan alliance between the wealthy business leaders and Religious Right.

@regehr @hackbod @dan131riley Silicon Valley leadership is now full of people who believe in the idea that "what if there could exist a boot so big that it's a moral imperative to start licking it now" (Roko's Basilisk)
