No shit Sherlock.Cutting federal #funding for #scientific #research could cause long-run #economic damage equivalent to a major #recession, acc/to a new study from American University. In recent months, the #Trump admin has sought to cancel or freeze billions of dollars in #grants to scientists at #Columbia, #Harvard & other #universities, & has moved to sharply curtail funding for #academic #medical centers & other institutions.#economy #science #innovation #idiocracyhttps://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/30/business/trump-science-funding-cuts-economy.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=p&pvid=C9A3F6F9-433F-4B43-8BB2-441EB0C8107E

Deeper cuts could be on the way. As soon as this week, the #Trump admin is expected to propose sharp reductions in discretionary spending, including on #research & #development, as part of the annual budget process.Economists have warned that such cuts could undermine American competitiveness in areas like #vaccine development, #AI & #QuantumComputing, & could slow #growth in #income & #productivity in the long term.#economy #science #innovation #idiocracy

The private sector can’t fully replace government dollars because basic #research is too risky & takes too long to pay off to attract sufficient private investment. The study, by a team of economists at American University’s Institute for Macroeconomic & Policy Analysis, is among the first efforts to quantify the risks posed by #Trump’s cuts. Because the full extent of the admin’s plans is not yet clear, the researchers studied a range of scenarios.#economy #science #innovation #idiocracy

Even the mildest approach — a 25% reduction in public support for #research & #development — would correlate to a drop in economic output.#US #GDP, adjusted for #inflation, would be 3.8% smaller in the long term — a decline similar in magnitude to that in the #GreatRecession, which ended in 2009. The drop in output would be much more gradual than that downturn, taking place over years rather than months. But it would also be more lasting.#economy #science #innovation #idiocracy

Cuts to #scientific #research would sap #innovation, leading to slower #productivity #growth &, as a result, permanently lower economic output.“It is going to be a decline forever,” said Ignacio González, one of the study’s authors. “The #US #economy is going to be smaller.”#economy #science #idiocracy

A smaller #economy also means less income for the #government to #tax. As a result, while cutting investment could save money in the short run, it could leave the federal budget in worse shape over the longer term. The researchers estimate that a 25% cut to #research #funding would reduce government revenues 4.3% in the long term.#Trump #economy #science #innovation #idiocracy

Larger #funding cuts would have even greater effects. A 50% reduction in funding would lower #GDP nearly 7.6%, the researchers estimate, & a 75% cut would reduce it 11.3% — a larger decline than in any recession since the #GreatDepression.#Trump #economy #recession #science #innovation #idiocracy

Such estimates might seem extreme, but they are consistent with other research. A recent paper published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas found that government investments in #research & #development accounted for at least a fifth of #US #productivity #growth since World War II.#Trump #economy #recession #science #innovation #idiocracy

“If you look at a long period of time, a lot of our increase in #LivingStandards seems to be coming from public investment in #scientific #research. The rates of return are just really high,”said Andrew Fieldhouse, a Texas A&M economist & an author of the Dallas Fed study. Political leaders in earlier [smarter] eras appeared to recognize that payoff.#Trump #economy #recession #science #innovation #idiocracy

@Nonilex The growth of Silicon Valley in the 70s and 80s can be traced to a handful of people from MIT (and several other schools under direction of Vannevar Bush) during WWII and then Bell Labs immediately after the war. This was all government investment and arguably gave America the lead in electronics for decades. ($millions created $trillions)Cutting funding to research universities will hurt us for generations.

In another study, Fieldhouse found that past efforts to cut the federal #budget largely spared investments in nondefense #research & #development. In recent weeks, #scientists & higher #education leaders have tried to rally support among the public & #Congress for continued #funding. On Tues, the #Science Coalition, a group of public & private research #universities, released a report on the role of federal funding in promoting economic #growth.#Trump #economy #recession #innovation #idiocracy

The report highlighted examples of private companies that grew out of government-backed #university #research.[too bad #Trump doesn’t read]“Research that’s happening at one university, it doesn’t just stay in those walls — it has a ripple effect,” said Abigail Robbins, president of the coalition.#economy #recession #science #innovation #idiocracy

@Nonilex Obviously, hatred is his chief emotion. He is skilled at infecting other people with hatred. He spends his time in mockery and insult. But, whom does he hate the most? I'd say Republicans. Before 2020, his hatred was mostly contempt for how easily they are manipulated. But it became embittered when he lost the election. They let him down, they failed him. He still needed them to keep out of jail, but he hates them the most now and is working to bring their utter destruction.

@Nonilex NY Times has given Trump free and easy coverage for years... it will not save you when he decides to attack your press freedoms.
