Here's a 2025 kind of mess... So I ordered 10 boards from JLCPCB weeks ago, knowing the tariffs were coming, gambling... lost. The choice for fab was JLCPCB with parts and assembly, from China and (ha!) expensive shipping, vs old standby OshPark, but they don't do parts and assembly. And I've grown to hate hand soldering tiny parts. JLCPCB just told me the tariff will cost me 329.62 on top of the 242.50 for the 10 assembled boards. That comes out to 572.12, or 57.21 per board. OshPark does things in 3's, boards only no parts. They want (coincidentally) 329 for 9 boards, or 36.55 each, no parts, no assembly. Parts will cost me $10 to $15/board, plus the hated tedious assembly work. So I'm gonna pay the fkn tariff, I guess. Even though I cannot afford it. I think it's time to make/buy a reflow setup.

@tomjennings We haven't seen any increase in cost on our last three shipments from China this month, but we aren't dealing in tech parts/PCBs.I don't know if the shipper is somehow getting around tariffs by smuggling or if it's just poor enforcement at the USA border (civil servants are lazy).Tariffs sting. I had to pay a 65% tariff when I imported USA-made tech into China around 2014. Made me really wish for a Made-in-China equivalent at the time.

@tomjennings As soon as I posted that I got news.Iâm told what is happening is from tonight they are terminating a class of shipping where parcels under $800 were waved through. It seems Temu was using this to mule their cheap goods into the USA to ship domestically and avoid import duties. The change is aimed at ending it and similar businesses. All parcels from China will now be held for inspection which will add shipping delays. Precise tariff enforcement on sub-$800 remains unclear.

@istvan This is going to be painful. That really sucks. I guess as long as airfare to/from China stays low then I don't really care too much. I can always buy goods overseas and bring them along with me as necessary. @tomjennings

@istvan If transportation costs increase to such a point that it ceases to become tenable for me to live in and commute from China then I'm going to lose my mind. I could care less about import costs, generally, as I rarely consoom. But, don't fuck with my ability to live where I want to live and be happy. @tomjennings

@adiz @tomjennings Thatâs how most of the foreign supermarkets in China started their business. They just paid people (mostly embassy and consulate workers) to smuggle stuff into China in their suitcases. Thatâs why they were always a grab bag as far as what you found back around 2000-2005.

@adiz @tomjennings I donât know how itâs going to affect transportation costs. Those went up and never came down. Used to be the case you could do round trip to China for $600 if you didnât mind a few stops. It went to $5000 during COVID and last I checked pulled back slightly to $2000, which is still almost a 4X increase. It probably depends on how they cancel flights, and how much of the flightsâ cost was being carried by also running air shipping.

@istvan I've been asked multiple times to bring things to/from in my baggage. But, I only travel with carryon bags. And I can't go around for 2 weeks hauling around checked luggage. @tomjennings

@istvan It was around $1,300 last year and earlier this year. Now, it's closer to $2,000. When I first went over it was $800, and that included a connection in Shanghai to fly domestic into Shenyang. @tomjennings

@istvan A lot of them want makeup and other luxury goods. Not so much electronics. I wonder if iPhones or other similar products will become markedly more expensive with these tariffs considering so many of them are manufactured in China still. @tomjennings

@adiz @tomjennings The women always asked for makeup and the men wanted tech shit.I never had anyone asking me to bring $15,000 timepieces back because anyone with that kind of change could just buy it in China.

@tomjennings You might price what https://aisler.net/ wants for assembled boards. You'll still have to deal with customs and settlement in euros but it might be less than jlcpcb depending on your needs.

@istvan Ahh. I knew there were various tricks of the trade for that, bundling up into larger shipments etc, but I have no knowledge of standard practice here. Thanks for that!

@tomjennings We usually get monthly boat shipment from China and urgent air mail every two weeks. Both are bundled with other businesses parts and shipped to a third party who breaks it open and distributes it between everyone.Super important to know who is doing that when youâre sending around $10,000 rocks and gold and stuff, but theyâve always been reliable.Tariffs are going to force us to make changes not because of price but because of shipping delays. đ
