Lots of peers and extended family my age got fucked by covid bullshit, "failed to launch" and subsequently embraced basement life. If you've got no investment in the future, and no avenue to invest in the future, you live for the present until you can't.If rent+food is the largest expense, owning 100% of your time and just pirating vidya or something is actually a better deal than moving out, getting a real job, losing all your free time just so you can do the same shit but get taxed for it. juice isn't worth the squeeze. If parent's kick them out, they'll work just enough for that rent+food. If they're smart, they work for future rent+food so that they can go back to the NEET life as soon as possible. If I can't get a gf then that's more or less my plan.

I did the math a while back and you can live off about $40k/year if you're serious about embracing NEET mindset, even if you're not truly living NEET life. Stuff like hiking is free. The big thing isn't really money, it's time. I've got a lot of job offers recently due to my skillset, but I've turned down a good chunk of them because it would be trading all the time I could spend looking to start a family and converting it into cash. Having kids you never see due to work isn't making it. We need both time and income for family, and we're getting neither.

My dad, with his work and wife and hobbies and projects, seems a lot more fulfilled, and even more energetic, given his age.I’m sympathetic to the NEET lifestyle, but in the long term, we need something more.
