Anyone else notice an uptick in items being shipped to the US getting mutilated with a razor by customs? (never had this happen before and now it's happened twice in a single month) First it was my custom spirograph from Poland. (Box was destroyed with a razor.) Then this very nice hand bound leather journal from Brazil. The boxes in both cases could have been opened and resealed without taking a razor blade to them damaging the item. I'm pretty upset to see this lovely book cut up like this.

@futurebird sounds like they're going to town with a box cutter and slashing open every package.

@darkling The seller seemed to have shipping insurance so I'm sending the images this and the outside of the box and paperwork to them so they can maybe make a claim. I may also try to call about it since this has happened TWICE. The first time they just ruined the box (a nice handmade box for storing the spirograph, but not the drawing machine itself, so I didn't think much of it. )

@futurebird Yes! I've seen plastic models, which are normally wrapped in plastic, have the ends of plastic removed or completely gone, and pushed in cardboard, evidence of penetrating searches.

@mikeolson I really hope this isn't some "new thing" but it feels like it's a "new thing" since it happened twice.Government operating with pure contempt and spite. Not just opening packages for not reason but letting you know by always needlessly BREAKING something.

@brooks That's what they did to my spirograph! They are clearly searching too many packages for "drugs" or whatever because they have know intelligence. (and if it were drugs just cutting it open might not help... you need intelligence to find things like that, good information, not just... destroy every package.)

@Lazarou @mikeolson I buy handmade items internationally often from these places and others. I've never seen boxes sliced open like this. I did have one arrived opened years ago, but it was opened and resealed with a little note from customs. This just came in a plastic bag which I tore open before I realized what had happened.

@futurebird @mikeolson I wonder if these 'new rules' involve slashing every package they get?https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/international-business/international-courier-giant-dhl-pauses-packages-over-800-to-us-amid-tighter-customs-rules/articleshow/120473933.cms

@Lazarou @mikeolson Well nothing I buy is over $800 but I bet maybe they open those with more care? This reeks of someone saying "well open every single one till you find it" with no concept of what that would mean.

@Wyatt_H_Knott Yeah. I'll fix it but it's such an INSULT to the careful work of the book binder. I kind of want to fix it visibly. Because it's part of the book's story. But for now I'm just mad.

@futurebird That's really terrible. They killed two birds with one stone: Damaging your imported item and hacking up a book. I am guessing future items will never make it to their recipients. The next one probably won't make it to you. This sucks and I am sorry they did that to your book.

@futurebird years ago, they opened a box of my books that I'd shipped to myself from another country. Some of my books were missing. Condoms, books belonging to someone else, and a VHS video tape were added.

@futurebird If someone were to hypothetically work in a similar function for a certain government entity (not saying that applies to me), they may point out that A. There are a lot of (relatively) new hires that were rushed on before a certain pompous dictator took control who have no idea what's going on and are super stressed out and B. They may be working at breakneck speeds with unfortunately reckless results. Not an excuse, just an unfortunate HYPOTHETICAL situation that I don't know of.

@futurebird Yes well the US x-rays every package and chemically inspects them (machines) so there is NO NEED to open them, this is a new thing of SPITE "I can do this and you can't do anything about it because-Merica", you can even expect more and more and more of this to the point where if they like something they opened they WILL keep it.

@futurebird We had a calligraphy CD removed from a beautiful book that I bought in the US to take to my wife in the Caribbean. It was inside my luggage that I checked in in Miami for my flight out. The border authorities left a note in the luggage to say they inspected it but why they removed a harmless publication CD escapes me. They provided no info. The process to make a complaint for something that cost $16 was so onerous we just accepted the loss. Never again!

@futurebird @Lazarou @mikeolson I worked quality control, in the US, at an employer that always hired the lowest paid people to work in the warehouse. AND they had timing metrics that, if failed, would get people fired.Every new employee opened every box like this - slash down the middle with a box knife, first thing on top ruined, and sent on to production.About 40 parts a day, everyday, rejected with the words "came like this" on the paperwork. About $170 each. Our fault, everytime.

@futurebird this happened to me relatively recently. They hacked open a cardboard box, got down to the original packaging, slashed that open, took everything out of the inner package, crammed all of the parts and the box back into the outer packaging, and taped over the hole.It was a piece of early PC water-cooling tech. They cut through vinyl tubing and gouged the water block.Ah well.
