The ants are out at last! I stopped to eat my lunch in the park and I met so many wonderful colonies. Tetramorium, Camponotus, Lasius, Monomorium so happy to see all the girls are back at it after a long winter.

Is NYC a city of people? Or is it more like a city of ants? They outnumber the people easily, probably by a few orders of magnitude. And they have all these complex systems and trade networks. They don't have tariffs. But they do have wars.

@futurebird My wife, pre-retirement, was a food animal veterinarian, specializing in dairy cattle. She always referred to her patients and their herds as "girls." I will pass this along to her.I love people who love nature/animals.

@futurebird I never considered the possibility of ants disappearing during winter in temperate climates! (In retrospect, it makes a lot of sense)

@futurebird are there any known cases of coöperation between ant colonies?

@futurebird This is slightly random, and you probably do, but do you know there is a video game called Empire of the Ants? It looks adorable.
