Many people just use their devices as tools to type words and use the internet. We aren't interested in or good at software. Spending hours of our leisure time learning how to set up and maintain something new or different on a computer is as interesting to us as unblocking drains or learning a sport we hate. Please let us moan about AI enshittification or express a wish for a Digital Deshittification subscription service without yelling 'do it yourself' and 'Linux!' at us every time.

@CiaraNi It's not only those that aren't good at software...I probably -could- do something myself, but it's the task at hand, I'm interested in - not the technicalities. All the support from here - it shouldn't be mandatory to build our own things - just to participate.

@tofticles @CiaraNi I definitely have the skillset to set up a computer without any AI crap. But I don't want to.And I don't want to fight with an expensive piece of equipment over the use of AI. In my case Apple should respect my choices and not try and sneak it in at each and every opportunity.

@nerdd @tofticles @CiaraNi Thirded! I basically can't buy the new computer I want (MS surface) without an inordinate amount of uncertainty regarding whether I can get rid of the 'AI' crud. And yes, I can install and use Linux, and have, but basically I just want control over my daily driver hardware and software, even being willing to pay extra to not being the product. The option does not exist at the moment. I am equally sad and 'somewhat miffed' (British interpretation).

@Wyrmlein @nerdd @tofticles The non-existent option, and for paying customers too, is scandalous. So many things to be miffed about, indeed!

@CiaraNi @nerdd @tofticles Exactly! Even if I don't want it for myself or on principle think it shouldn't be the thing it is blown up to be, I do believe it should be a real, regular choice, and not just a choice of 'how much'.(To paraphrase an old joke: Excuse me, mister Satre, we've run out of milk. Do you mind if your coffee is without cream instead of without milk?)

@Wyrmlein Ha! Fine comparison. Personally I am dreaming of an EU initiative similar to GDPR consent laws that forces software providers to get active end-user consent for the installation of AI features, which cannot be bundled into general updates, and which must include a single over-riding switch for later removal. @nerdd @tofticles

@CiaraNi @nerdd @tofticles Thank you, and yes, I've been thinking along the same lines. This needs an EU intervention to even register with the techbros foaming at the mouth at the thought of even more pervasive data harvesting, clad in the hide of helpfulness and imagined customer satisfaction. Seriously - who do I write my strongly worded letter to? (Not a question specifically for you, more a wish to actually register my annoyance with the proper authorities)

@Wyrmlein Agreed. Nothing less than EU-level intervention will do it, at this point. @nerdd @tofticles

@CiaraNi @Wyrmlein @nerdd @tofticles you can't be bothered to learn other tools which provide real freedom, but instead want to apply force to have companies to modify products you choose to use out of your own accord, do i understand this correctly?

More than once, someone giving me (kindly meant!) advice on what I 'just' need to do has casually recommended that I use a 'spare laptop' while working out how to install the 117 mysterious software-thingies. It reminds me that we're on the same side, yet talking about enshittification in different languages. Lots of us don't have 'spare' computers or phones. We use computers like ovens or showers. They're functional everyday devices. If they don't work, we want a plumber, not to learn plumbing.
