Han Junjia's 26-year rail career is the ultimate time-lapse of China's rise. In 1992, he shoveled coal into roaring steam engines. Today, he pilots the 350km/h 'Fuxing' bullet train, watching the countryside blur past in climate-controlled silence. While the West debated high-speed rail, China built it, compressing a century of transport evolution into one working life. Real progress isn't about gadgets, but about lifting generations into the future.http://en.people.cn/n3/2018/1205/c90000-9525433-2.html#china #technology

@yogthos What a great contrast in one working life. Really shows how much China has changed in just one generation.

@yogthos It's amazing what you can do when you completely control a countries economy

@olav @yogthos Except they don't? Completely control it, I mean. They plan. They set policy. They monitor outcomes and change policy. But it's ludicrous in extremes to think *anybody* can "control" an economy.

@ZDL@yogthos China has built massive cities nobody lives in. https://www.news.com.au/finance/real-estate/across-china-more-than-50-sprawling-ghost-cities-that-were-meant-to-house-millions-sit-eerily-abandoned/news-story/4bd0d56c7c519ac753810b92f0e74af4

@olav @yogthos Oh, you're one of those, are you.Yes. There are some ghost cities that were built that people decided not to move to. (So much for your "control" of an economy! Must be one of those Schroedinger Controls.)But note: they built them. There's housing for about 50-60 million people in surplus in China. How's the housing situation in your country? (Hint: absolutely fucking shitty.) Which do you think is better? A surplus or a shortage? (Hint: the former.)Specks and beams.

@yogthos They've been doing a lot of coping since 2010 at least. I think Americans need to actually leave their country and see other places because their notions of how things work and look outside of the USA needs some radical adjustment if they want to survive as anything of influence.

@ZDL XHS has been hugely impactful in this regard allowing millions of regular people from US and China were able to talk to each other. This sort of communication was always the promise of the promise of the internet, and there was simply no practical way for so many people to connect in this way before it. I really hope China will continue encouraging these kinds of interactions and opening up more platforms so people in the west can get a glimpse of what life in China is really like.

@yogthos And vice versa.A lot of people here have almost delusional ideas of life in the USA based on the sunny view given by entities like Voice of America or assorted movies. It's good for them to hear unfiltered American voices back.

@ZDL indeed, the US managed to built up an incredible image for itself over the years and it's completely divorced from the reality people actually live in
