Goddammit I'm gonna write about the sci-fi future gum that fixes your cavities and I will NOT do anything but celebrate how many people it "puts out of business" in the story. But mostly celebrate the end of the tooth ache and the dawn of the Age of Sugar!

This seems silly, but if you only knew how much toothaches hinder human progress and joy world wide you'd think about them a lot more. If you want to make that "futurecity.jpeg" real make it so no one gets cavities anymore. (and don't talk to me about low sugar diets to do this we did not invent a drug like sugar just to ignore it, yeah we could ban booze too, but I care more about curing alcoholism. Get it?)

The number one reasons kids miss school are dental appointments AND for lower income kids ... staying home with an awful toothache.

@futurebird Ah... I know I'm doing one of those but... We didn't invent sugar... It was literally in our foods before we even knew what it was. (Not even like beer where I guess someone let something foment and then drank it anyway by accident or something I guess?) Like various things naturally have sugars and it was in a lot of stuff we ate, then eventually we just found a way to extract it from stuff.I'm sorry. You can throw torches at me now. It's just when you said all that I sort of remembered how some people have actually gone so far as to claim that sugar is "toxic" when our cells literally need a certain minimum amount of it.

@futurebird It's fun to think that the further in the future you go, the less futuristic a city should look - given thousands of years the most resilient and longest lasting architecture makes up more and more of the fabric - and looks more and more aged and worn and significant and real. It's fun that the oldest non-public buildings throughout the UK and Europe are cob construction... mud and fiber over wood framework, lime plaster and wide roof overhangs to protect them.100s of years old.

@futurebird I've heard about an engineered version of whatever the most common mouth bacteria is that produces ethanol instead of lactic acid as its waste product, and that right there would make tooth decay a thing of the past. I believe this actually exists and is in trials, maybe in China? And it's not ethanol in sufficient quantity to affect you like having a drink.

@futurebird At my previous address, the middle school had an orthodontist’s office on the grounds; that’s where they printed the money Hard to argue with convenience though

@jacquiharper An onsite dentist improves graduation rates. NYCDOE used to do this ... and probably ought to again.

@futurebird I attended PS40 from 1968-1973, and remember TB testing and polio vaccine (sugar cubes 🤩) being school-based activities—possibly also vision and hearing tests
