Mittelschmerz: ovulation painOne in three women experiences ovulation pain. For most, it’s a sharp twinge a couple of weeks before their period. Because it’s a women’s health issue, no one really knows what causes it, or why some women only experience it on one side, but it’s probably related to the egg follicle swelling up before the egg is released, or to the actual release of the egg. For some women, the follicle keeps swelling for longer than it should, making a small cyst that is more painful when it bursts, which is what happens to me. Every month, it caused me three or four days of agonising pain. It took several years to get a proper diagnosis, because they kept ultrasounding me at random times of the month, so I’d have nothing there, then I’d have a 3cm cyst, then a 1cm one, then nothing... and, of course, the medical staff always assumed I was wrong about what had been there the previous time... and then the keyhole surgery showed it wasn’t endo and there were no cysts, so the surgeon (while I was still barely awake from the anaesthetic) just gave me a referral to a pain management clinic and said I needed to learn to live with it... and then the first BCP they tried me on didn’t actually stop me from ovulating, which is “impossible” and just proved that I was wrong with my fixation on it being related to ovulation was wrong... and anyway it’s just a bit of cramping, right?(This was all made even harder for me to convince them of because I had a mirena and didn’t have periods, so couldn’t show them a nice chart showing pain however-many days before my period. And of course no blood means there’s nothing at all going on.)Eventually I got the attention of a good gynae by starting the appointment with the words “I want a hysterectomy” in my late 20s. She actually listened to me, and read my pages of notes (half my ultrasounds are only in my medical records because she took photocopies from my notes), and went away to do some research before putting me on an unusual formulation birth control pill, taken with no break weeks. And just like that the pain magically went away. I’m not making this post for sympathy, I’m making it so that more people are aware of the potential problem. So that if your friend, or relative, or colleague, or student, if any woman you know complains of a slight pain a couple of weeks before her period you can say “that sounds like ovulation pain, it’s completely normal”. And if her pain is severe and lasts for days, you can say “I read something about that once. You should speak to a gynae about it, because it’s not normal and it is treatable”. Thank you, on that woman’s behalf.

@Flick Thank you so much for sharing. This. This right here is why I bang on so much that we need to stop normalizing female pain, and playing along to the script that our cycles are just supposed to be agonizing. That is a script written by men with no interest in understanding women’s health.Because we do experience a physical state change throughout the month, it is normal to have various sensations. Some may be mildly or fleetingly uncomfortable for some women. But if you are living in pain, if you are suffering, if your symptoms are interfering with your life, do not let any doctor tell you that is just part of being a woman, existence is pain. It’s not. That’s bullshit. Humans are nomadic endurance runners, the idea that the majority of us are just supposed to be living in paralyzing pain half the time is fucking ridiculous. Don’t give up until someone takes you seriously. As in all things medical, it’s possible that even with the best care they may never find a total cure, necessarily. It may also be the case that the cure is something that the medical industry doesn’t specialize in (for a lot of women, chronic pelvic pain is related to things like diet, trauma, inflammation, or weight). But don’t let anyone brush you off and tell you to just suffer quietly and get on with it.Women’s health matters. Your suffering matters. Your suffering does not define you, it is your body trying to tell you it needs help. You are your body’s only representative. Don’t give up until someone helps you.Oh, and also, don’t bother seeing male doctors. I do notice how you didn’t get any real help until you saw a female — fucking same, and fucking same again for every other woman I’ve ever known who’s ultimately solved or at least treated their pelvic pain. Only see female doctors.

@knucker It’s ridiculous that we’re not taught more than the bare minimum about our reproductive systems, but then it’s also ridiculous how little medical professionals know about them. Sue? Ha, not here in NHS land. I did get a written apology from the surgeon for brushing me off when I was too drugged to answer back, which is better than nothing.

@Flick @knucker In the states we just die in excruciatingly horrible pain because our insurance companies if we even have them often refuse to cover things like that and the doctors are just concerned with billing us so they barely ask us what is wrong.

@Flick Replying to an old post. But oh my goodness. This is so similar to what happened to me. I would get the WORST pains ever during my period, and I'm talking, falling to the floor, screaming, literally swallowing a packet of painkillers and it still wouldn't go away. It took them 8 years. EIGHT YEARS to diagnose me with endometriosis. Why? Because "it's all in your head, you think too much, it's a normal part of a woman's life"

@viy They ruled out endo surprisingly quickly for me (maybe three years?), in passing during a laparoscopy. Are you any better now? I know the treatments can be hit and miss.

@Flick Ugh. They didn't even diagnose screening for me. It was all just "you're stressed, it's because of your mental health, etc" I am better! I'm honestly just raw dogging it. I was proposed surgery because my case is pretty severe but I'm trying to hold out, because I really want a baby of my own. If I can't take it anymore I'm just saying F it though.

@Flick I had one the size of a lemon burst, required surgery. I am now almost certain that my maternal line had PCOS but that sure wasn't diagnosed 50 years ago.
