I've quit using Amazon's Audible service since it's looking like that's heading towards streaming next year. Leaving Librivox aside there are two alternativers worth mentioning: Libro .fm and Downpour .com. Over all, they both have pros and cons. Libro_FMPros: Completely DRM-free 100% of the time, most books can be bought with credits and credits don't expire, has a decent appCons: Owners are woke. Not woke-lite, full on woke. But since everything is DRM-free you can buy what you want and ignore what they shill on the front pageDownpourPros: Baring a small number of exceptions, the site is DRM-free. There are a ton of deals going on evey day and credits never expire like with Libro_fm. Downpour is also closer to politically neutral than Libro_fm, even though it's hard to get away from that with how the industry is atm...Cons: The site is more boomer in terms of how it's designed. Not horribly, but it could do with an update. The app is more lacking compared to Libro_fm's too. Functional, but not always super intuitive.

@get I'm from the 1980s and I know how to pirate. But just pirating everything doesn't solve the problems with tradpub.

@get I'm a zoomer and I have owned a server for BitTorrent and Plex. Now I'm thinking of reactivating it on hardware with smaller footprint. @Neo_Dolus

@ned @noyoushutthefuckupdad Lets see, I can pay 15 a month for a credit that I can use to pay for a 60 dollar book... hmm, not a bad deal.

@Neo_DolusThen either a) the book isn't worth $60 in the first place. Or b) they make more money from people stocking up credits and not using them. It's just a bullshit way to obfuscate the real cost. @noyoushutthefuckupdad

@ned @noyoushutthefuckupdad Yes, they collectively make a profit on memberships. And is it for you to decide what a book is worth or me?

Pirates will literally do anything instead of being responsible for their own media or pausing their consooming for 5 minutes.

@ned @noyoushutthefuckupdad How is it a bullshit argument? I'm not saying piracy is evil, but it does come with one practical drawback: You don't exist as far as the market is concerned. You are only looking at this as someone who whats to consume media and not as someone who has an effective vote via his wallet.
