I see SO MANY posts saying that Trump deporting people is like The Holocaust, El Salvador is doing The Holocaust, etc.I can't help thinking: This might not be legal to post if you're in Europe.Details differ, but generally speaking, denying, questioning, belittling, minimizing, contextualizing, or otherwise undermining the gravity of The Holocaust is forbidden in most European countries. If you claimed that the entire extent of The Holocaust was Germany deporting 1000 people who were there illegally, this would be a pretty clear case of Holocaust Denial, and therefore illegal to post in most of Europe. So therefore, if 1000 people are deported from the US and you post that this is comparable to The Holocaust, there is a possibility that this too is illegal because the implication is the same. These types of post are always bad taste, disrespectful and cringe, but if you're European, they might also be illegal.

@cjd besides the fact that the Trump actions are not exactly same as the Holocaust, because people are not killed on an industrial scale after being deported, the process of being taken from the street , disappear and being deported somewhere else is like things happened during world war 2. Also good to remember that what became the Holocaust was in the beginning not that extreme and more like what Trump is doing. Call me conservative, but I wouldn't mess around in any of these kinds of discussions. There are a million and one ways to express concerns without bringing up the one topic where certain statements of opinion are actually illegal. Not only that, but what an old government thought was just fine, a new incoming government might be much more keen to prosecute.I'm sure the pro-Palestine protesters at Harvard never considered that THEY would become the face of antisemitism, but now here they are.

@cjd > if you're European, they might also be illegal. It only goes one way; it is in practice legal to say what you like about Orange Man (Bad).

@cjd I've heard of cases where politician said something illegal, got sued, was sentenced to apologize in a manner as public as the OG message (so if the OG message was in a newspaper, he had to pay a newspaper to publish the apology). But I've never heard of a rando om the internet gettimg sued/prosecuted for such things.Fortunately, here, peopld are not getting disappeared frim the streets for minor infractions yet.

You make a great point. The entire thought process of "be careful, that might be illegal" is a US-centric concern because only in America do people get their lives ruined over dumb paperwork crimes, often with no specific identifiable victim.

@ErikJonker@cjdAlmost everywhere in Europe, including here in Germany, we can write what we want. There is FREE SPEECH.Only if you deliberately relativize the Holocaust can and will this have social and legal consequences. As a politician, my grandfather warned against fascists, especially Hitler and also communists, for years. He was sent to Dachau concentration camp in 1933. There he and many other middle-class Germans were shown

first-hand what it was like to act against the fascists. Like others, he was released months later. One point that I am not aware of in US camps (or those the USA being responsible): hard labor was required in all concentration camps."Arbeit macht frei" (See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbeit_macht_frei) @ErikJonker @cjd

@cjd hmm ok you nerd-sniped meapparently in Poland we have a law that says:"who publicly, and contrary to facts, denies genocide mentioned in article 1, is subject to a fine or up to 3 years in prison. The sentence is made public."couldn't find news of anyone getting sentenced for that in Poland.1/

@cjd but there's also"who publicly promotes nazi, communist, facist, or other totalitarian system of government, or calls for hate based on national, ethnic, race, or religious differences, is subject to up to 3 years in prison"and I could find like 3 news articles from the last decade about people getting sentenced for that. The most severe case was a guy who got 1 year in prison for organizing a "Hitler's birthday party", to which he accidentally invited undercover journalists.2/

@cjd well... supposedly it was in a forest, they had 3rd reich flags, 3rd reich march playing on the speakers, an altar dedicated to Hitler... the main guy had an SS uniform and made a speech about how Hitler was such a good person, admiree by women, loved by children...It does sound like a 4chan prank but it's so rodiculous that IMO the only way the attendees didn't burst out laughing is for them to actually believe it...

If he'd'a just made it a costume party, he wouldn't have been identified because everyone would have looked the same.

@cjd @ErikJonker I agree with you. The world is becoming more authoritarian, not only the USA. The right is gaining influence over media and governments. We had this in Europe in Hungary and Poland. The Poles were able to vote out an extreme right-wing government after 8 years. Slovakia elected an extreme populist, and Italy elected Meloni. That's why she and Trump get along so well. Not everyone is a Nazi. But I think the term fascism definitely applies.

@hundhamm @cjd @ErikJonker > extreme right-wing government Curious what you think made them "extreme"? Not wanting their people to go extinct?
