I'm watching a video about "the crown of St Wenceslas" which is from 1346 in Prague. All these comments and the guy in the video keeps saying how 'beautiful' it is and I'm just not seeing it? Ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life. I guess it's "beautiful" that it's from 1346 and so well preserved. And naturally it's not made for the "modern eye". But... good lord. It's like someone broke a stain glass window and cleaned it up with tape. Am I being unfair?

@revndm If I had to write about it I'd say something like "It clearly communicates the wealth of the king, and his power to wear so many valuable materials without anyone snatching it of his head to make something nicer out of all that gold. A desire that must have been intense for those viewing it."

I can enjoy the rocks being only minimally faceted to show that they’re translucent, not trimmed into geometries of very human fashions. Rock respect, yeah. Might not ge what anyone else likes about it.The enamel makes me wonder how it looked on a person by candlelight. @futurebird

@futurebird crowns are basically a magical power hat. in times before electric lights, people would use reflectors to increase light in a room. if your magical golden power hat reflects a lot of light in a dim room, it projects that power into the room. the gems may have been almost more like a modern party light, the way they probably throw a colourful glow all around and reflect off the gold.

@futurebird It looks like the type of crown you’d get in a cheap King Halloween costume. You know, the flammable kind. Or perhaps it’s a toy from a McDonalds kiddie meal.

@futurebird Just completely off the top of my head I can recall seeing crowns, headdresses and such from the 1200s equivalent of Persia, China and Japan with much finer gold-smithing, and maybe better cut gems? But also it just looks a bit clumsy and like the stones poke out instead of being integrated at all. Sorry to the original artisans, but it looks a bit like somebody got told to make a crown out of sheet brass and party jewellery for a LARP. 😅

@futurebird Oh no, you're absolutely not. All the "beauty" that exists in them is, as far as I can tell, extravagant exhibition of wealth.Mostly they look like bullshit. Fake, even. This looks like costume jewellery and brass.I will say that the old Scottish crown jewels look a lot better than this, but goddamn, that's a low bar.

@futurebird No, this was specifically designed to be gaudy and not even hiding it. It was just to show off "hey, look how many precious gemstones We can afford to have put into this thing to show off how rich We are when we use other people's money to buy things."

@futurebird No, you are just choosing not to be a sycophant. It IS ugly. Maybe they are looking at things like craftsmanship or quality of metals and jewels.I remember looking at a really boring-looking photo once that was getting accolades. I think it was from the 60s or 70s. I then learned about the actual processing, which was really cool, and gave a frame of reference to those who admired the thing.

@futurebird 😂 You are quite correct. But I like the gemstones because of their age, and the sources and cutting/polishing technology available then 😊. They'd probably look better loose, rather than mounted in that crown though.

@futurebird Honestly, I think it’s fair to call it tacky—because you look at that design and all it’s doing is showing off “look what big gems I have!” People were capable of much more subtle and sophisticated work in that time period; they just chose not to do it here.

OMG.YOU can own a copy of the ugly hat for just $2500! I am flummoxed and when I feel this way I know that I must study. I need to understand why people like this thing. I need to know if it was the inspiration for the paper Burger King's crowns. There is something about kingship and power that eludes my comprehension here at a very deep level.I must go deeper. I must dissect. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1707762812/13th-century-saint-wenceslas-crown
