@athos oh right. those are official holidays in germany too but since I'm not religious (anymore) & i have flexible holidays/PTO I don't see a point in using my holidays now instead of any other day

@lizzy @athos over here we have had holidays (tuesday and friday) but they're not full on holidays on the public sector. anyways, I'm not religious but you can bet your nice ass that I'm gonna take advantage of the holidays

@mischievoustomato @athos it's important that protections exist like guaranteeing a minimum of holidays and PTO, but beyond that yea i think they should be free to chose when to take them

@mischievoustomato @athos the problem with "if they both agree" is that a company usually has a lot more bargaining power than you as an individual, which is why labor laws need to exist. the weekend, the 8 hour day, etc. etc. simply were not a thing before we started regulating companies in that regard (in response to unions and communists fighting for it lol)

@mischievoustomato @lizzy the worst is that the vacation period is an employer decision. in white collar jobs employers usually wont object (but it usually requires a 30 day notice), but in more low wage jobs they sometimes say "lol no"the employer cannot not give you the 30-day vacation period within one year (or it pays a fine to the employer and it is subject to ligitation), but it can choose when

@mischievoustomato @athos i think the majority of people behaves that way. but sadly it's enough for a few people to be selfish assholes to ruin things for everyone else, especially because the more ruthless someone is the more likely it is they manage to get to a position of power.
