What Hannah Arendt saw in Hitler’s Germany, we can see in Trump’s America Comparing Hitler and the Nazis to Donald Trump and his MAGA movement is of course fraught. Trump’s world war is a bloodless one over trade; his lawless roundups of migrants and domestic enemies aim to deport, not exterminate. And yet the parallels are undeniable. That was dramatically clear in a preview and discussion of a documentary on the life of German American Hannah Arendt, the Jewish survivor and chronicler of Nazi totalitarianism. (The film, “Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny,” will air on PBS on June 27.)https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2025-04-10/hannah-arendt-germany-hitler

@cdarwin >his lawless roundups of migrants and domestic enemies aim to deport, not exterminate.here's a fun, oft-glossed-over fact: in the early days, hitler & the nazi party referred to their plans for jews as "deporting" them, as well. they also often clarified that they meant to exterminate, but the euphemism was still used

@cdarwin I think the difference between Trumpism and extermination is only a matter of time.Already the death rate of CECOT is alarmingly high. And like the Holocaust, a lot of those deaths are by malnutrition rather than direct execution.

@cdarwin On the ideal subjects for a totalitarian authority:“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist. but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (ie, the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false(ie, the standards of thought) no longer exist.”The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt
