@vic @eriner why rootless? I absolutely know where I came from and I do appreciate the tradition, but does that mean I should be somehow honor bound to be loyal to one particular government? Look, I served in the Polish military when we deployed to Iraq because the US was crying "article 5" even though Poland was just negotiating NATO membership back then. It was all on volunteer bases and I went anyway. What does that make me, not more of an "American patriot" than most of actual Americans?

This is symptomatic of a deeper problem. It just doesn't really pay to be the most loyal person to the country. The guy who dies serving his country in a war loses, while the guy who stirs up the war to sell weapons wins. And he may not have any other citizenship, but that doesn't make him *loyal*.It's a difficult problem, and when you try to solve it you end up doing a national religion so that you can train in group loyalty to people. Ethnic diversity is also a disaster because ethnicities tend to regard themselves as "nations" within the country.A side note I've thought of is that a state might give political and beurocratic roles to people based on immutable characteristics, like blondest hair, bluest eyes, or tallest. Because the current system is based largely on ambition, and political ambition often implies intent to do corruption.

I reserve the right to return to the United States anytime I so choose to do. As a persona rule, not a legal one, I only vote in the country that I reside in. I was a permanent resident in Sydney (as are all NZ Citizens by default when they arrive in Australia) for 10 years before that š
