Thinking about how angry and disappointed #Picathecat would be if she knew raccoons existed. Bigger than her, with *hands* and just doing whatever they want. There is a family of raccoons under the apartment complex out back-- you need to know that "under the apartment complex" is this very creepy abandoned rail yard, with old buildings from the 30s, just sitting in the dark. The family climbs the stairs 2 stories to get trash each night. Local kids have these stories about "mutant raccoons"

@futurebird I was biking home from pottery class one day, and I saw a cat and a raccoon siting next to each other eating from the same food bowl on the sidewalk. 🤣

They aren't mutant at all. They are, unfortunately, very cute. I hope no one feeds them. It'd make them bold in all the wrong ways for a city raccoon. The ones in central park are the size of watermelons and bold as sultans. The family I've seen is very furtive and shy. They have to climb a long way to get food. I wonder if they live in the old railroad office building? They just built the towers over it ... it's wild really... secret city down there. Very creepy.

If you don't know, the reason you shouldn't feed NYC raccoons is it makes them curious about people and prone to beg for food. Which makes people think they have rabies. Then they call "animal control" who will kill them.(There are some who will move them, but it's not like there is any place without "enough" raccoons.)If they are scared of people and cars they can live in the city just fine. And the fear of rabies isn't irrational. Though I think many animals get accused when they want food.

@futurebird they are *extremely* cute. Including their cute little paw-hands! And the way they work together! They're the best. Also, any one of them could be carrying pathogens that cause serious neurological damage in humans, and so i stay the hell away from them.

@futurebird Fed animals are dead animals, and, too often, people get hurt as well. Put out bird feeders. Don't feed the animals.

@futurebird reminds me of my father-in-law always blaming cats for tearing up the trash bags on the street at night. Always saying, "Damn cat!" in Cantonese... I was up late, though. I watched. A cat was sniffing around earlier, but retreated into the nearby tree as soon as a raccoon showed up and then tore into a bag rummaged. The cat just looked down while the raccoon did all the dirty work. There wasn't anything to eat in there, anyway.

@futurebird animals which become dangerous when fed: foxes, coyotes, raccoons, deer, bears, alligators, crocodiles ... heck, just don't feed any wild animals. Except maybe birds? But I even know a lady who claims she got stabbed by a hummingbird while trying to refill her hummingbird feeder.

@futurebird there is a place without enough raccoons! It’s called England! There are none here insanely? Send em over -- I will cuddle all of them + explain that they are now “rubbish pandas”.

@futurebird As an ex -Raccoon step-parent, I highly discourage shunning them. Without doubt the most intelligent non-human I've ever known. That being said - the creepy is kinda real, *we* just aren't wired to interpret their facial expressions. They don't emote that way, at least not like a cat or dog or any normal mammal for that matter. You have to pay attention to sounds and behavior to guess their moods. But a wild 'coon will recognize a "Hi, your fine" immediately from a human.
