So what's the current option for people who need a Youtube And Networked Video Files Box? I've been using a Roku but it's getting increasingly shitty. I don't want to sysadmin a raspi, and I want something that doesn't have an unresponsive UI because it's a minimum-spec ARM chip. Anything anyone can suggest as a good option?

@foone this is not answering your question at all, but did yours start doing home screen video ads too? I'm very disappointed in you, Roku. And you too, Pi-hole.

@foone If I didn't have a Chromecast or Google TV or whatever those bozos are calling it now I'd probably get a cheap (or free) second-hand PC that's below the Windows 11 cutoff and put ChromeOS on it.(ChromeOS specifically so that the other people in the house can understand it. If it were just me I'd put a 'real' Linux on it.)

@foone it’s an AppleTV. Will run YouTube and Plex flawlessly. Can be controlled via CEC if you hate the remote. Will happily run nonstop stuffed in a cabinet somewhere. My ancient v3 still gets updates and is only now just starting to get a little laggy in the UI compared to my 4K. Can also be plugged into Ethernet, if that’s important for you.

@foone If anyone suggests it, the Google TV (name subject to change), we have two, they're pretty shit... The saving grace is they're not bad enough for us to have replaced them, but that's about it... not exactly high praise.

@foone not ideal by any means, but I have a really cheap Chinese box that I don't dear to connect to the internet, so what I do is connect it to my wifi but set the gateway to 0.0.0.0 (any fake IP works if it rejects null route). This way vlc can connect to my samba share and I play YouTube via fcast and grayjay which have an option to proxy the dash stream using my phone.

@foone the Google Streamer box won me over finally, after my OG Chromecast Ultra started randomly crashing. It's a well executed Andoid TV device.
