I see the same kind of criticism aimed at Asahi Linux and Chrultrabook, "Why bother supporting Linux on this hardware, just stop buying bad laptops" Not supporting Linux on Apple Silicon or Chromebooks, won't at all slow down the sales of these devices, but what it does do is give these devices the ability to have a second life once they've gone EOL saving at least some of them from going straight into e-waste

@BrodieOnLinux And sometimes the hardware can be genuinely nicer than the usual alternatives. Linux on a Chromebook Pixel (2015) remains my best Linux experience to date.

@BrodieOnLinux getting Linux to run in places it's not supposed to be is also fun!

@BrodieOnLinux Also not to mention providing more accessible ARM Linux devices beyond lower end SBCs! Asahi Linux is my primary (and only) way of playing games, and it's mostly a great experience!

@zak @BrodieOnLinux >Linux on a Chromebook Pixel (2015) remains my best Linux experience to date. All Chromebooks come with Gentoo GNU/Linux with a desktop environment without freedom? You went from GNU/Linux to GNU/Linux, with the visual difference being a desktop environment with (some) freedom and you think you installed "Linux"?Many such cases; https://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-users-never-heard-of-gnu.html

@weirdtreething For sure, and not every Chromebook is a throw away device aimed at schools. I was surprised how many interesting devices were out there

@BrodieOnLinux >Not supporting Linux on ... ChromebooksSo what kernel comes on those Chromebooks, Brodie?Unfortunately the apple laptops are handcuffed, to ensure that it is cryptographically impossible for the user to have freedom, meaning they're e-waste right out of the factory.

@BrodieOnLinux This plucky thin client Dell Wyse 5470 machine is around $30-$100 USD used. Keyboard is great, it ran a version of Linux from the factory to do remote desktop, so driver support is solid. Everything works great, no gaming but the youtube works. A solid light weight don't really care what happens to it need a laptop to run around with workhorse. This machine technically can run Windows. LOL

@BrodieOnLinux@mstdn.social not supporting these devices just accelerates the climate disaster that we've already put ourselves into. people who need a laptop will get a laptop one way or another.

@BrodieOnLinux Which is specially relevant to chromebooks since those are probably by far one of the most e-wasted laptops.Plus well computers are typically just considered waste just due to lack of basic maintenance (like making sure there's space left on the filesystem) and/or OS destroying itself.

@BrodieOnLinux I genuinely considered buying a second hand Chromebook because of Chrultrabook Linux, because my gaming laptop was too heavy, tablets don't support Linux, and Chromebooks go for really cheap, and I just needed a word processor.

@BrodieOnLinux My Ryzen 5 2500U powered laptop that was declared "obsolete" by Windows 11 (and Windows 10 is discontinued). Runs Ubuntu very happily. Mind you, the hardware is VERY capable for all the multimedia and internet needs and probably even more. 4 cores 8 threads, 8GB RAM and 512GB NVMe SSD. How the fuck is this "too old" Microsoft?

@BrodieOnLinux And gives poor people like me the option to buy them used well over a decade after they were made and still make use of them daily, not as a retro gimmick but competitively with newer hardware!

@BrodieOnLinux To me, running Linux on a chromebook vs Asahi Linux on a Mac M is not the same!Linux on a chomebook is just a way to get something out of those devices... On a Mac M, it is an experiment on exciting new hardware! These devices are incredible, except for the stock OS.

@BrodieOnLinux The weirdest part about this criticism is that it exists at all. I mean, people work on wathever they feel like it, its not like theres a mandate to only work towards some grand objective.

@BrodieOnLinux After 15 years with Thinkpads, I don't know what to buy next since Thinkpads are now total carbage. There's Framework, but I have my doubts for chassis, keyboard + it's missing trackpoint.System76's Virgo won't be ready before my T580 dies. I even bought 2 new Ryzen-Thinkpads after T580 but their chassis didn't last.
